SmackMellon Artist Studio Program

SmackMellon
New York, NY, United States
05/01/2018 - 05/01/2019
Application due: 09/29/2017
Overview and Studios
The Artist Studio Program was launched in 2000 in response to the crisis of available affordable space for artists living and working in New York City. The program provides six eligible artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space accessible 24/7 and a fellowship (dependent on funding). The program runs for an eleven-month period from June to May. The studios are located on the lower level of our building at 92 Plymouth Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn and range in size from 250 to 300 square feet. The program does not provide living space.

Production Facilities
Artists also have access to shared facilities that include: a state-of-the-art digital production lab, including a set of 27" iMac workstations professionally configured for video and graphics editing, calibrated video monitors, a 3D-capable HD projector, surround-sound monitor speakers, flatbed scanners, a wide-format photo printer, a color laser printer and wireless internet access; a fabrication shop including table saw, grinder, drill press, welding equipment, and hand tools; and a shared kitchen/lounge area. Our staff is on-hand to provide technical support and to respond to the studio needs of our resident artists.

Special Notes
Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it. Not all studios have windows. Artists will not be permitted to choose their studio. Please also note that due to the possibility of flooding in our basement studios, we strongly recommend that artists keep anything valuable off the floor at all times; therefore artists accustomed to working on the floor should think carefully about whether our studios will meet their needs.

Application and Selection Process
To apply to the 2017-2018 season, visit our How to Apply page. Please review the eligibility and application guidelines carefully before beginning your application. Each year, Smack Mellon convenes a panel of arts professionals to select the artists from over 600 applicants. A group of finalists who are not selected for the Studio Program are featured on our Hot Picks page for one year.

Open Studios and Studio Visitors
Smack Mellon hosts two Open Studio events annually, as well as sponsored visits from curators, critics and gallerists, which provide significant exposure and invaluable career building opportunities. Please see the list below of studio visitors.

In addition to monthly studio hours, artists are expected to help at Smack Mellon's benefit the first weekend in May and make themselves available for studio visits with school groups and other tour groups outside of Open Studio event hours. These service hours total about 12 hours for the residency year.

100W Corsicana
Corsicana, TX, United States
01/01/2018 - 12/01/2018
Application due: 09/01/2017
100 West grants artists and writers residencies to create work in this historic building repurposed for studio space. Large scale, light filled rooms are provided alongside complete living accommodations and wood shop access to produce work in two or three dimension, installation, or writing. This residency experience is enriched by artist-made furniture and antiques in a building virtually unaltered since the 1890s. Original mill work, light fixtures, painted doors and walls now cracked and worn remain amid three years of preservation work, and effectively contrast contemporary modes of art making. 100W maintains a close connection with Dallas art culture less than an hour away from downtown Corsicana, where faded vestiges of the nineteenth century oil boom make it quintessentially Texas.

100W offers the applications linked above for artists and writers seeking both funded and non-funded studio residencies. Two fully funded, 1 month residencies are available for one artist and one writer between January - May, and October - December 2018.

Applicants may also receive partial 100W funding, local grants noted on the application form, or the opportunity to exchange an artwork to compensate residency rates. 100W takes a Summer hiatus June - September (see below for details). This application will be reviewed for multiple upcoming opportunities, including group exhibitions, and 100W Catalogue contributors.

Open Call Bauhaus Residence 2018

Masters’ Houses in Dessau
Dessau, Germany
04/01/2018 - 10/01/2018
Application due: 09/06/2017
Living and working in the Schlemmer House in Dessau
Apply now – Applications close on 6 September 2017

In the 1920’s the Masters’ Houses in Dessau became the epitome of an artist community of the twentieth century. This is where Walter Gropius, Oskar Schlemmer, Georg Muche, László Moholy-Nagy, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee and their families lived next door to each other. Here they were joined by their friends and visitors. Artist collectives, artist couples and artist friendships developed here, with everyone working together in the open structure of the model homes located in a park. However, when the Bauhauslers left in 1933 the area became deserted and the work created as a result of the artistic effort was abandoned.

Since February 2016 the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation is enabling young international artists to once again live and work in the Schlemmer house – even if the restrictions of the perseveration of cultural heritage attached to the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site are very strict. With the new format the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation would like to promote the current focus of attention on the Bauhaus heritage, revitalise the Masters’ Houses and in this context promote artistic and creative work of international significance which will then at the end of the residency period be displayed in the Gropius House until the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019.
