Printer-in-Residence, Bodleian Bibliographical Press

Centre for the Study of the Book, Bodleian Libraries
Oxford, United Kingdom
Application due: 03/01/2018
The Bodleian Libraries invite applications from experienced printers and book artists for a residency of one month, to take place during the University of Oxford academic year 2018-19.

The Bodleian Libraries are fortunate to have a printing workshop housing several hand-operated platen presses and a rolling press. The workshop, located in the Old Bodleian Library and accessible directly from the Old Schools Quadrangle at ground level, is used for teaching to University students, visiting classes, schools, and the public, and has a strong connection to engagement and outreach from within the Libraries, especially to the Exhibitions and Education programmes.

The Printer-in-Residence programme, inaugurated with the residency of Russell Maret during October 2017, is intended to increase awareness of the facility and to encourage a creative spirit in the book arts within the University. Hand-craft printers and printmakers are invited to propose a project for an edition to be made in the workshop and completed during a one-month residency.

Applications are invited from letterpress printers or creative book artists who are demonstrably able to make full use of the Bodleian’s Bibliographical Press workshop. Applicants should be practitioners in printing or the book arts who have created a body of work of high quality.

Applicants are advised to note the equipment available at the Press, including the range of type available, and to describe how they would provide any other materials required for their work during the residency.

Funds of £2,000 are available to support the residency, along with a small budget to support outreach activities. An invitation to take up the award is dependent on agreement on the dates of a residency of one month. The residency must be arranged for one month within a University of Oxford term. It is the responsibility of any candidate who is invited to take up the residency to secure any necessary UK visa to enable the period of residence required in Oxford.

Candidates must have proven knowledge and practical skills of using flat-bed and/or cylinder printing presses, and will be expected to use the equipment and type available in the Press (described below) as well as any materials they may supply.

Applicants should outline a plan for the one-month residency including a publication using the Press workshop facilities and equipment. A copy of the publication will be accepted into the Bodleian Special Collections, and should be made available to other libraries.

The residency provides:
- Support, up to a maximum of £2,000, for subsistence and travel to support a one-month residence in Oxford. The details are to be arranged by agreement with the Library.
- Access to the Special Collections of the Bodleian Libraries as a reader, subject to Admissions procedures.
- Use of the Press workshop (contents described below). Standard quantities and qualities of paper and ink will be provided.

The Printer-in-Residence will be asked to participate in outreach from the Bibliographical Press, in the form of lectures and workshops addressed to various audiences. The proposed programme should include:
- A public lecture
- A seminar or workshop with students from the University of Oxford and other institutions
Relevant research areas: Western Europe, Contemporary, Book arts, Letterpress, Relief printing

Skowhegan

Skowhegan
Madison, ME, United States
07/01/2018 - 08/25/2018
Application due: 01/10/2018
Skowhegan is an intensive nine-week summer residency program for emerging visual artists established in 1946.

Skowhegan seeks each year to bring together a diverse group of individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to artmaking and inquiry, creating the most stimulating and rigorous environment possible for a concentrated period of artistic creation, interaction and growth. Located on a historic 350 acre farm in rural Maine, the campus serves as a critical component of the program.

Neither a school in the traditional sense nor a retreat, Skowhegan draws its vitality from the community created through the talent and energy of the participants, and the distinguished Faculty of Resident and Visiting Artists who provide them with support and critical assistance. Founded by artists, and still governed by artists, the program provides an atmosphere in which participants are encouraged to work free of the expectations of the marketplace and academia.

While on campus, participants are given individual studio spaces, as well as access to a sculpture studio, a fresco studio, a media lab, a library composed of over 10,000 volumes, over 300-acres of farmland, forests, and lakefront, and a rich community of artists. Alumni often report that the intensity of the Skowhegan experience has had a profound effect on their work and their lives. In order to allow others entry, no participant is allowed to return for a second summer. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Douglas Sell Fellowship at Shoestring Press

Shoestring Press
New York, NY, United States
Application due: 11/01/2017
The Douglas Sell Fellowship at Shoestring Press is open to artists in all disciplines.

During this one-month fellowship, the participating artist will enjoy full membership at Shoestring Press and work in collaboration with the Master Printer to produce a body of work which uses printmaking as an integral facet of the artist’s project. Projects may range from the production of a traditional print edition to performance, film, social practice, or other manner of work, but should emphasize using the unique capabilities and resources of our printshop, studio, gallery/performance space, and artistic community.

Project proposals should emphasize the technical and conceptual importance of printmaking processes to the artist’s intentions and the project’s goals.

Subjects of particular interest for this fellowship include print culture in American social history, the history of landscape, natural resource management and environmental policy, popular music movements in the state of Michigan, and twentieth century Mid-Western avant gardes in the visual and performing arts. These should not be viewed as strict guidelines, but a melange of possibilities drawn from the life of Douglas Sell, whose memory this fellowship honors.

The selected artist should expect to learn and develop processes and procedures with the Master Printer, and to be involved as the primary maker in the physical and technical aspects of the project. A budget of $500 is provided for materials and assistants as needed. The Master Printer’s time and the benefits of membership at Shoestring Press are included gratis as part of the fellowship. Additional costs will be the responsibility of the resident.

A complete application must include:

Artist CV/Resume

Artist Statement

Project Proposal detailing the importance of printmaking, technique, and multiple originals to the aims of the project

2 Professional References

Up to five work samples, which may include images of finished work, preliminary materials, sound recordings of up to 5 minutes, and video recordings of up to 2 minutes

A preliminary project budget

Please email all application materials to fellowship@shoestringpressny.com, subject heading “Douglas Sell Fellowship.”

Fellowship will be scheduled at the mutual convenience of the artist and Master Printer, between January 15, 2018 and November 1, 2018. The material products of the fellowship, whether a formal print edition, a series of multiple originals, ephemera, or other items, will be divided between Shoestring Press and the artist.

Fellows may provide for their own housing over the course of the residency, or they may be provided a private room in the Master Printer’s Brooklyn home for $600 for the length of the residence.

Print Your Large Woodcut with Big Ink @ 3 Fish Studios

3 Fish Studios
San Francisco, CA, United States
04/28/2018 - 10/29/2017
Application due: 02/19/2018
Event Synopsis: BIG INK is pleased to partner with 3 Fish Studios for two one-day large woodcut printing sessions. We’ll be utilizing 3 Fish’s 48" x 72" etching press to pull prints. If accepted, artists will have two months prior to the event to carve their image into a piece of plywood. BIG INK remains in contact with each participant providing guidance and technical support when needed. Eric Rewitzer and Annie Galvin are printmakers and painters, husband and wife, and founders of 3 Fish Studios. The Outer Sunset hub is home to their workshop and studio, where art happens daily and visitors are always welcome; they love collaborating, making, and sharing creative projects with cool folks.

About BIG INK: Our mission is to inspire a greater appreciation for relief printmaking and extend its practice among contemporary artists. We invite artists, via a call-for-entry application process, to submit a proposal to create a woodcut, at least 24” x 36” in dimension, through bigink.org. Approximately sixteen proposals are accepted per event and those selected are given two months to carve an image. At the end of the two months, BIG INK meets with the artists at a predetermined space, such as an art center, festival, or community print shop, and helps them print his or her woodcut onto paper. These events culminate in exhibition opportunities and potential sales for the artists who participate. Since the BIG INK’s founding in 2012, BIG INK has assisted hundreds of artists in creating new relief works at venues across the United States.

Event Location: 3 Fish Studios, 4541 Irving St, San Francisco, CA 94122

Deadline for Consideration: Midnight, Feb 19th, 2018

Event Date(s): Apr 28th & 29th, 2018

Criteria: BIG INK considers proposals based on the following:

Size: Images must be at least 24” x 36” in dimension but not larger than 40” x 60” in dimension.

Material: Artists are responsible for securing their own ½” thick plywood, 1/2" MDF or 3/8" Shina for carving and their own carving tools. The plywood or MDF must be ½” thick, the Shina must be 3/8".

Originality: The uniqueness of the design will be a major consideration. A drawing, digital graphic, altered photography, collage, sketch, painting or print are acceptable examples to include with your proposal. Images must be solely created by the applicant.

Cohesiveness: The anticipated dimensions of your woodblock should match the format of the image you submit.

Fees: It is free to submit a proposal; accepted artists pay $295 dollars to participate. This covers all consumable materials for the event including: printing ink, paper, cleaning supplies, and equipment usage. All that is required of the artist is to bring a fully carved block.

Benefits: BIG INK events are best described as a concentrated burst of productive energy bringing together leading artists from throughout the region to network with each other and potential patrons. We provide the technical expertise and specialized equipment necessary to bring the artist’s studio directly to the public in an engaging way. In addition, selected participants also receive:

Professional Prints: BIG INK assists in the creation of three impressions from each participant’s carved block.

Video Tutorials: Never made a woodcut or woodblock print? No problem! We’ve created step-by-step video tutorials to walk you through the whole process. High-Res Photography: We provide a professionally photographed image of each participants work at no additional charge. Curated Exhibits: National and international art venues curate BIG INK exhibits from our growing portfolio. Your work could be featured next! Outreach: We create a page for each participant on our website. Our web and social outlets receive thousands of views each month and will put your work in front of a larger audience.
