Houghton Library seeks an Assistant Curator to support managing, building and sharing the Library's Printing and Graphic Arts (P&GA) collection. Reporting to the Curator of Printing and Graphic Arts, the Assistant Curator performs a range of administrative, outreach, collection-development, and book-arts functions. Part of a highly visible and active department, the Assistant Curator collaborates with all areas of the Library including Public Services, Technical Services, Public and Scholarly Programs, and other curatorial departments.

The successful candidate will possess strong subject knowledge in at least one area of strength in the P&GA collection, and will, ideally, also bring expertise in an area of printing and graphic arts outside of the collection's current strengths. The successful candidate will also possess the capacity to master over time the broad range of formats, subjects, and time periods represented in the P&GA collection, and the flexibility required to develop facility in the numerous skillsets used in curatorial work.

The Department of Printing and Graphic Arts was founded in 1938 by legendary curator, collector, and connoisseur Philip Hofer. The department holds original artifacts from all periods illustrating the book arts and the materiality and historical development of the book, whether manuscript or printed. Its strengths reside mainly in European and American traditions of manuscript and printed book illustration, printing technologies, typography, calligraphy, book design, and early photography. In addition to facilitating teaching and research based in the collection, the department administers a vibrant set of programs including the Frances and Philip Hofer lecture series, the Philip Hofer Prize for Collecting Books or Art, workshops on letterpress printing, and other activities core to the department's mission and spirit.

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant/Associate Paper Conservator. The successful candidate will join a dedicated conservation team who work collaboratively with BMA staff across multiple departments including curatorial, registration, installation, and exhibitions to examine, research, and care for works in the BMA collection and on loan to the Museum. • Examine and evaluate the condition and media of works on paper that are being considered for acquisition, collaborating closely with curatorial staff.
• Work closely with the Preparator for Works on Paper and the Director of Conservation/Paper Conservator to ensure the safe housing, handling, transit, and display of works on paper.
• Collaborate with other members of the Conservation Department to perform preservation and collection maintenance activities, including monitoring the museum climate and assisting in integrated pest management.
• Identify media, perform analytical analysis, and conduct and disseminate research on works of art on paper.
• Assist in the training and oversight of conservation interns, technicians, and contractors as needed.
• Act as a courier for loans to other institutions.
• Engage in conservation outreach to visitors, staff and other professionals while striving to advance the Museum’s commitment to equity and inclusion.
• Maintain and acquire skills and knowledge of current conservation techniques and principles through participation in professional conferences, lectures, and workshops.

This full-time, exempt position reports to the Director of Conservation.

Associate Paper Conservator

The Paper Conservation Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tang Wing, is looking for an Associate Paper Conservator for activities related to the relocation of the collection of works on paper from the Modern and Contemporary Department during the preparation and construction work on a new Museum wing. Carry out condition examination and some treatments of assigned works of art.
Undertake written and digital documentation of works of art and track their progress though the survey process.
Devise conservation strategies and housing solutions based on current conservation standards and ethics and communicate recommendations for the movement and packing of the collection and issues of conservation verbally and written with numerous parties.
Organize project workflows and track numerous concurrent projects. Establish priorities and meet deadlines set in consultation with project manager.
Supervise the treatment, examination, documentation, and scheduling of project assistants.
Work cooperatively or independently as needed.
Other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Master’s level degree from a recognized conservation training program with specialization in paper conservation.
Seven combined years of full-time experience as a Paper Conservator, fellowship experience included.
Excellent examination skills. Knowledge of use of microscopes and alternative light sources.
Demonstrated excellence in performing high level conservation treatments.
Ability to devise conservation strategies and housing solutions based on current conservation standards and ethics.
Knowledge of preservation standards for archival matting and housing, environmental conditions.
Ability to use digital cameras and electronic resources for documentation and to learn Museum databases and digital documentation protocols.
Willing to obtain training on rigs and ladders and able to work at heights (8-10ft)
An interest in Modern and Contemporary material is desirable.
Experience with Microsoft Office suite.

The Harvard Art Museums seeks a leader in the field to become the next Houghton Curator and the Head of the Division of Modern and Contemporary Art. Position Description:
The Houghton Curator and Division Head will join the staff at the museums as they implement a broad, multi-year rethinking and reframing of the permanent collections and galleries, a key goal of the museums’ newly-formed five-year Strategic Plan. Working in a team environment, the curator promotes dialogue, engagement, and experimentation. The curator collaborates with colleagues across the museums, in particular in the two other curatorial divisions—European and American Art; Asian and Mediterranean Art—as well as the Division of Academic and Public Programs and the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies. The curator will work closely with the curator of Prints and the curator of Drawings who are both situated in the Division of European and American Art. The Houghton Curator will seek programmatic partnerships across the Harvard campus and lead conversations on critical issues in contemporary art.

As Houghton Curator:
Make new acquisitions to diversify the collections and craft an ambitious exhibition, research and publication program; create exhibition checklists, propose and oversee loan requests and other exhibition-related project management, and public programs; work closely with students and faculty to foster significant and sustained curricular use of the collection for both undergraduate and graduate teaching; actively cultivate donors and supporters; in collaboration with development colleagues in Institutional Advancement, conduct outreach to individuals, foundations, and governmental agencies to raise funds for a range of museum priorities, including acquisitions, exhibitions, conservation, and publications; mentor and supervise postdoc curatorial fellows within the institution, as well as Division graduate interns and undergraduate student workers.
