Specialist II – Wallach Division of Art, Prints, and Photographs

New York Public Library, New York, NY, United States
Applications due: 07/28/2022
The mission of The New York Public Library is to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities, and we rely on three great resources—our staff, our collections, and our physical and digital spaces—to provide opportunities for learning and growth.

Established in 1987 with a gift from the Wallach family, The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints, and Photographs is the primary access point for researchers using the Research Libraries’ materials on painting, sculpture, photography, prints, architecture and the decorative arts. The Print Collection encompasses over 200,000 prints along with a specialized reference collection of over 15,000 volumes on the history of prints and printmakers. The Photographs Collection comprises approximately 500,000 photographs, including examples of almost every photographic process from the earliest daguerreotypes to contemporary digital images. The Wallach Division also serves as the access point to the Spencer Collection of fine bindings and illustrated books. Together, these collections include more than one million works of art in various mediums and formats, complemented by nearly 700,000 monographs and periodicals, much of which can be accessed by researchers in its study rooms, which are among the most active and accessible in New York City. The quality, depth and scope of its holdings have earned the Wallach Division an international reputation among a broad variety of scholars and lovers of art.

The Specialist II serves the Curator of Prints as a steward and interpreter of the Print Collection, working with partners throughout the New York Public Library to thoughtfully acquire, promote, exhibit, publish and program the use of its holdings.

Early Material Cataloger

Beinecke Library, Yale University, New Haven, CT, United States
Applications due: 07/17/2022
Reporting to the Head of the Bibliographic Description Unit, the Early Materials Cataloger creates, enhances, and maintains original and complex bibliographic and authority records for manuscript items and printed works, chiefly from the medieval through the early modern periods, in the fields of British and European literature, history, and the humanities. Plans, directs, and reviews work of cataloging assistants and student assistants. Assists in the ongoing development of the unit’s cataloging procedures for related collections. Completes special projects as assigned. Contributes to Yale University Library and University-wide initiatives and is expected to be active professionally.

This position will be assigned a rank of Librarian 1 to Librarian 3. Librarian ranking information can be found at Librarian ranking information can be found at http://bit.ly/YULRanksPromotions .

This position represents an exciting opportunity for a scholar-librarian to work at the intersection of early materials cataloging and scholarship. We seek applicants interested in the politics of metadata, the materiality of the textual object, trends in forensic analysis, and the broader questions relating the creation, survival, transmission, ownership, description, and use of special collections to their understanding within scholarship, the classroom, and the public spheres of the humanities. Applicants that meet the minimum education/experience qualifications are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will receive intensive on-the-job training in manuscript and print cataloging and paleography if needed, according to the protocols of the department and library. The Bibliographic Description Unit, part of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library’s Technical Services Department, is responsible for cataloging material in all formats, ranging from medieval manuscripts to twenty-first century publications.

Over three centuries, the Yale Library has built special collections representing an extraordinary range of human experience and knowledge. The collections range from ancient papyri and medieval manuscripts to twenty-first century archives, from incunabula to websites. They are among the largest and most widely used special collections in the world: the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Lewis Walpole Library, Manuscripts and Archives in Sterling Memorial Library, Medical Historical Library, and special collections in the Divinity Library, Gilmore Music Library, and Haas Arts Library. In order to expand access to these extraordinary holdings and strengthen connections across all Yale Library special collections, the Yale Library is currently reorganizing special collections operations. The Beinecke Library and Manuscripts and Archives are integrating their staff and collections, and a new Special Collections Technical Services department has been formed to provide services for all special collections at Yale.

Lunder Curator of Works on Paper and Whistler Studies

Colby College, Waterville, ME, United States
Applications due: 07/29/2022
Reporting to the chief curator, the Lunder Curator of Works on Paper and Whistler Studies advances curatorial work related to prints, drawings, and photographs at the Colby College Museum of Art including exhibition development, collection research and interpretation, and teaching. The curator augments and illuminates the museum’s transhistorical and transnational works on paper collections through exhibitions, collection rotations, and acquisitions, and advises the museum and its benefactors on art purchases and gifts of art.

Since its founding in 1959, the Colby Museum has collected works on paper and several major gifts have had a transformative impact on these holdings. This includes gift of watercolors and other works by John Marin from Norma and John Marin Jr.; the establishment of the Alex Katz Collection in 1992; the partial gift, partial purchase of the Terry Winters print archive in 2002; and the bequest of Paul J. Schupf (1937–2019), which features a major collection of Richard Serra prints. In addition to the Marin family gifts, Norma Marin offered a promised gift of her exemplary collection of German Expressionist prints and American photographs, and the museum’s photography collection has greatly benefited from the Tsiaras Family Photography Collection, 500 photographs collected by Colby alumnus Dr. William Tsiaras ’68. The gift of the Lunder Collection in 2013, and a second gift in 2017, when the Lunder Institute of American Art was established, brought hundreds of works by James McNeill Whistler to Colby and this collection has grown to include additional works by Whistler as well as gems from the history of Japanese and European printmaking. The Lunder Collection also includes notable depth in the works of Mary Cassatt, Arthur Wesley Dow, and Jacob Lawrence. With the Lunder Collection as a touchstone, the Curator of Works on Paper and Whistler Studies manages the Lunder Consortium for Whistler Studies with other organizational partners in the field, representing Colby in this international consortium. This includes sustaining relationships, envisioning and shaping impactful projects, and ensuring opportunities for students to learn and gain professional experience as part of the consortium’s initiatives.

The curator stewards select archives related to the works on paper collection and contributes to the museum’s commitment to illuminating new, understudied aspects of art history, including the history of American art, a primary programmatic focus. The work of this curatorial leadership role is collaborative and includes fostering relationships with colleagues at the museum, faculty, students, and local and regional residents. The curator works closely with the museum’s Board of Governors and campus, local, regional, and national communities and also collaborates with Advancement and others at the museum to facilitate fundraising and public communications efforts. In the curator’s area of focus, they advance the museum’s strategic plan and cultivate opportunities for the museum and its Lunder Institute for American Art.
