Research/Current Projects "The American Etching Revival: Its National Inspirations and Lasting Legacy" While the etching revival in American had a great many European, and particularly French, sources, artists of the movement sought a unique American identity through the visual language of the Hudson River School and their depiction of the American landscape. In doing so, the etching revival paved the way for a twentieth-century reinterpretation of the national landscape through a focus on expressive and energetic line, striking contrasts of light and shadow, the American countryside, and rural work. "Inter-Collected: The Shared History of the Print Club and Museum Collection" In the early 20th century, a great number of print clubs were formed across the United States—in New York and California, Ohio, Illinois and Kansas. Each worked, in its own way, to advance the art of printmaking: they supported local printmakers, offering presses, demonstrations and a community of shared interests. Many also emphasized public education and encouraged print collecting in the belief that familiarity with art and with working artists would lead Americans to see printmaking as a valuable art form. This mission often led to collaboration with local art museums that offered exhibition and meeting spaces, as well as access to a broader public. Clubs in Chicago, Philadelphia and Cleveland had a particularly profound influence on the development of museum collections. Taking Flight: Richard Koppe's Works on Paper American artist Richard Koppe’s career exemplifies the interconnectedness of art, design, and engineering in the 20th and 21st centuries. The paintings and drawings on exhibition can be linked to his experiences as a student of the New Bauhaus, a wartime aircraft production engineer, and art educator at one of the first design schools in America.
