Description: This course will serve as a comprehensive introduction to the history of the book in early modern Europe, from the beginning of the fifteenth century to the middle of the seventeenth. Our goal will be to use the holdings of the UCLA Research Library, with a focus on its Aldine collection, the Getty Research Institute Research Library, and the Huntington Library to learn to ‘read’ a Renaissance book, both as a physical object and as a carrier of cultural values. We will examine in turn how these books were produced, how they were distributed, and how they were used by those who bought and read them.

Production Printer / Graphicstudio

The highly skilled Production Printers at Graphicstudio research techniques and develop projects with visiting artists working in residence at Graphicstudio. The Production Printer must possess a broad knowledge of materials and print making processes. Graphicstudio serves the academic mission of the College of The Arts and the Production Printer will participate in teaching, demonstrations and supervision of students including providing independent study opportunities and offering workshops and demonstrations on materials and processes. The Production Printer will share responsibilities for studio and equipment maintenance.

Yaddo is a retreat for artists located on a 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. Its mission is to nurture the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without interruption in a supportive environment.

Yaddo offers residencies to professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in one or more of the following disciplines: choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Artists may apply individually or as members of collaborative teams of two or three persons. They are selected by panels of other professional artists without regard to financial means. Residencies last from two weeks to two months and include room, board, and a studio.

The next application deadline is January 5, 2022. The portal for that cycle opened November 1, 2021.

Overview

The Artist Studio Program was launched in 2000 in response to the crisis of available affordable space for artists living and working in New York City. The program provides six eligible artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space accessible 24/7 and a fellowship. The program runs for a 50 week period from September 1 to August 15. The studios are located on the lower level of our building at 92 Plymouth Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn and range in size from 250 to 300 square feet. The program does not provide living space.

Smack Mellon’s Artist Studio Program supports emerging or early career artists. Applicants must be legal residents of NYC for one year prior to the application deadline and be residing in NYC at the time of the application process and for the term of the residency. All applicants must be United States citizens or legal Permanent Residents of the United States, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree program, and must be able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the Smack Mellon residency.


Production Facilities

Artists also have access to shared facilities that include: a state-of-the-art digital production lab, including a set of 27″ iMac workstations professionally configured for video and graphics editing, calibrated monitors, HD projector, stereo monitor speakers, flatbed film scanners, a wide-format photo printer, a color laser printer, and wireless internet access; a fabrication shop including table saw, bandsaw, drill press, belt-sander and welding equipment. Our staff is on-hand to provide technical support and to respond to the studio needs of our resident artists.


Special Notes

Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it. Not all studios have windows. Artists will not be permitted to choose their studio. Please also note that due to the possibility of flooding in our basement studios, we strongly recommend that artists keep anything valuable off the floor at all times; therefore artists accustomed to working on the floor should think carefully about whether our studios will meet their needs.

Open Studios and Studio Visitors

Smack Mellon hosts two Open Studio events annually, as well as sponsored visits from curators, critics and gallerists, which provide significant exposure and invaluable career building opportunities. Please see the list below of studio visitors.

In addition to monthly studio hours, artists are expected to help at Smack Mellon’s benefit the first weekend in May and make themselves available for studio visits with school groups and other tour groups outside of Open Studio event hours.

Description:
Inaugurated in 2016, the Borgeson Artist in Residence Program is a twelve-week summer artist residency for early and mid-career artists, hosted by the Department of Art and Art History at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, that runs from mid-May through mid-August of each year.

The residency provides housing, studio space in the Department of Art and Art History, a financial stipend and a one-month exhibition at Hope College’s 1,300 square foot De Pree Art Gallery at the conclusion of the residency. The exhibition opens in late August and runs through September. The residency stipend is paid in two installments, at the beginning of the residency and in September, at the close of the exhibition.

The resident artist is expected to work in their studio at the De Pree Art Center throughout the residency and to be available for two- three student or community-centered events. This might include a workshop, lecture, critiques or studio visits with students, alumni, or the broader West Michigan community.

As part of the residency’s goal to create opportunities for our students and the larger campus community, the department hosts an artist’s lecture, closing reception and related programming in conjunction with the AIR exhibition in September.

The William H. Helfand Fellowship for American Visual Culture
The fellowship is designed to promote scholarship in visual culture through the study of textual and graphic sources from the 16th through early 20th centuries held in the Library Company’s collections. Possible research topics include the production and consumerism of printed graphics; the histories of printing and photographic processes; popular iconography; ephemera; incunabula; the illustrated book trade; and historical depictions of gender, race, and class. Fellows will have the opportunity to attend the Library Company’s public programs and events, participate in the vibrant scholarly community of Philadelphia, and present a lecture about their research.

The stipend is $2500 for a one-month fellowship, which may be fulfilled between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023.

The Program in Visual Culture Terra Foundation Fellowships for Research on American Popular Graphic Arts
The Terra Foundation Fellowships support research in visual materials from the American popular graphic arts collections. The collection contains prints, photographs, drawings, and ephemera created between the 18th and 20th centuries in multiple aesthetic styles and by a wide range of artists, including Charles Willson Peale, John Sartain, Frederick De Bourg Richards, and Jessie Wilcox Smith. We welcome applicants from a range of disciplines, including, and not limited to scholars, studio artists, curators, conservators, and digital humanists.

The stipend is $2500 for a one-month fellowship. Two awards will be made for Terra Foundation Fellowships, which may be fulfilled between June 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.

Application materials are due March 1, 2022, with a decision to be made by April 15. RISD Museum is pleased to announce a fellowship funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. A three-year term position within the Museum's department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, this is an exciting opportunity for a junior scholar who wishes to pursue a curatorial career. The J. Paul Getty Museum is pleased to announce “Color on Paper”, a workshop organized in conjunction with the Getty Foundation’s Paper Project initiative devoted to training and professional development for curators of prints and drawings.

“Color on Paper” will bring together early and mid-career curators and conservators specialized in works on paper created before 1900 CE with a threefold goal:

1] to support advanced study on the subject of color, advancing ongoing research or laying groundwork for future projects;

2] to provide an opportunity for curators and conservators to work collaboratively and deepen learning about technical art history, its tools, and applications;

3] to further the understanding and interpretation of works on paper.

“Color on Paper” will consist of a series of six virtual seminars throughout the course of 2022 and a week-long residency in Los Angeles in early 2023. Led by international experts, the online seminars will provide participants with foundational knowledge through reading assignments, discussions related to the materiality, function, and meaning of color in works on paper. During the residency, participants will explore Southern California collections of works on paper through the lens of color, attend presentations on interdisciplinary research, and take part in an experiential workshop led by Chicana artist Sandy Rodriguez on pigments and dyes used in indigenous artistic practices.

This workshop has been conceived with an eye to promoting fulsome cross-regional and cross-cultural dialogue among specialists of art created around the globe. To that end, we welcome applications from colleagues with interest and expertise in works on paper from across cultures and geographies.

The Collections Management Assistant (CMA) serves as a cataloguer and Rapid Capture assistant in the Department of Drawings and Prints and as such, works to input and maintain records in the department's database and handles the administrative and organizational work relating to the department’s Rapid Capture project. They will function as an integral member of a team cataloging the department's holdings of 1.3 million works on paper and creating corresponding records in The Museum System (TMS). The CMA is responsible for the integrity and clarity of collections information (text and image) in TMS. The CMA works closely with the curators and other department staff under the direction of the Collections Manager.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

- Catalog objects in the collection and enter data into TMS database according to the Museum's standards.
- Handling original works on paper and translating data into TMS database.
- Work with Photo Studio photographer to prepare works for Rapid Capture; transport works to Photo Studio
- Create records and charts for Rapid Capture administration; carry out post-production work on photographs
- Work closely with curators regarding cataloguing and Rapid Capture.
- Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Skills:

West Kentucky Community and Technical College’s Paducah School of Art and Design (PSAD) is presenting its International Juried Print Biennial in PSAD’s Bill Ford Galley within the art school’s 2D and Graphic Design Building, March 3-April 14, 2022. U.S. and international artists are eligible to submit a total of three artwork entries. The exhibition will consist of original printed works of art or works where printmaking plays a major role in the work’s execution. All work must have been executed within the past three years. Entries are due by January 13, 2022.

The juror is Aaron Coleman, noted printmaker and assistant professor of art at the University of Arizona. The entry fee is $35.

Cash awards totaling $1,750 will be awarded: Grand Prize $1,000; Second Place $500; Third Place $250.

A 30% commission will be applied to all sales. If work is not for sale (NFS), please specify and indicate an insurance value.

A virtual tour of the exhibition will also be hosted at PaducahSchoolofArtandDesign.org.

A maximum of three digital images may be submitted through CaFÉ for jurying. Accepted work that differs markedly from the digital image may be disqualified by PSAD. Please include a recent curriculum vitae with your artwork submission.

Since its founding by West Kentucky Community and Technical College in August 2008, PSAD has expanded its facilities and programs through the opening of three new buildings – the 6,700-square-foot Ceramics and Small Metals Building, sited adjacent to the 7,000-square-foot sculpture building, and the 2-D and Graphic Design Building. This landmark 32,228-square-foot historic building now houses PSAD’s programs in drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, fiber arts, visual communication, and multimedia, as well as the 1,600 square foot Bill Ford Gallery. All PSAD programs are supported by state-of-the art studios and equipment.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College is a regionally accredited college recognized as an Aspen Prize Top 10 Community College five times by the Aspen Institute and named a Finalist with Distinction three times.
