• Publishable reports on archives relating to the history of printing (up to £500)
In both cases grants may be used to cover material or other expenses, including travel, accommodation, photography etc., but excluding basic subsistence expenses such as food. Training and employment (such as research assistance or salary replacement) costs will not be eligible for funding.

Qualified institutions, especially those having both collections of American prints and an established
fellowship program, are invited to apply for funding for a month-long research fellowship or internship.
The grant for accepted projects will be $2,000 from the Wendy Shadwell Fund of the American Historical
Print Collectors Society.  
   
Internships might involve exhibition research, a short-term cataloging project, conservation projects, or
other object-based experience. Institutions may select one research fellow/intern candidate each
year, then send information about the individual and the project. More than one institution can qualify to
receive these internship/fellowship positions in a given year, depending on funding available to the
American Historical Print Collectors Society through the Wendy Shadwell grant.   
   
Deadline for submitting applications is May 1 st  of each year, with the first group of fellowship/internships to
be awarded in 2022. Each individual selected would be designated as that institution’s American
Historical Print Collectors Society Fellow. Individuals selected will receive a one-year membership and will
be expected to write up a report of their project for publication in the AHPCS News Letter.

Born in London in 1931, Bridget Riley rose to prominence in the early 1960s for artworks that seemed to defy known formal parameters for abstract painting. Her first solo exhibitions in London (Gallery One, 1962, and Robert Fraser Gallery, 1966 and 1967) and inclusion in seminal group exhibitions of the decade (Bryan Robertson’s The New Generation, Whitechapel Gallery, 1964, and Painting and Sculpture of a Decade 1954–1964, at the former Tate Gallery, 1964) brought her into aesthetic conversations with peers and set the tone for her paintings to be considered and well-received by national audiences. Notably, international attention commenced the following year, 1965, when she was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s pioneering show of contemporary art, The Responsive Eye. Among the ninety-nine artists from fifteen countries selected by William Seitz, Riley stood out for the inclusion of one of her paintings, Current (1964), on the cover of the exhibition catalogue and the wide discussion of it in the critical reaction to the show. Chief among the group, her paintings seemed to best fulfill the show’s curatorial premise of presenting objects as “generators of perceptual responses in the eye and mind of the viewer.” In 1968, she co-represented Britain at the Thirty-Fourth Venice Biennale (along with Phillip King), where she was the first living British painter and first woman to be awarded the International Prize for Painting. After 1968, Riley would no longer be considered only a British artist.

To mark the occasion of the Yale Center for British Art’s exhibition Bridget Riley: Perceptual Abstraction (March 3–July 24, 2022), this one-day symposium aims to generate new scholarship by recontextualizing and interrogating the impact of transatlantic and international experiences and relationships on the artist’s practice. Riley has long advocated for the primacy of the subjective painting experience, recalling that the post-war interest in perception was international and dynamic with markedly similar works of art being produced on either side of the Atlantic. At the center were Riley’s paintings, privileging the sensorial act of viewing.

We welcome proposals that situate Riley within US and/or global frameworks—by examining her relationships to artists, collectors, and gallerists; her traveling exhibitions and international shows; her exposure to historic painting and international artworks and artistic traditions—and explore how these connections and experiences have governed and continue to govern her practice and the reception and interpretation of her paintings and drawings. One of the goals of the symposium is to produce the widest possible understanding of Riley.

The CNA Fellowship Program supports and nurtures future generations of scholars and specialists in Netherlandish Art globally, with a focus on object-based research and learning in connection to public-facing scholarship. Through mentorship and access to the MFA’s rich collections, resources, and research facilities, fellows further their professional development and are part of an active learning community in Boston. Through the Fellowship Program, the CNA seeks to build a global cohort of fellows. By doing so, the Center aims to foster meaningful and lasting connections to enhance the field of Netherlandish Art as a whole.

Open Fellowships

During the program’s inaugural academic year, which begins in September 2022, the CNA will host up to three fellows. Two fellowships, lasting nine to twelve months, are available for candidates focusing on Netherlandish Art from the 17th century. Lasting for six months, the Flanders State of the Art Fellowship supports a fellow focused more specifically on Flemish art and culture from the period, supported by the Government of Flanders.

Fellowships at the CNA provide opportunities for talented individuals at different stages of their careers—from outstanding predoctoral candidates to emerging scholars at the postdoctoral level—to conduct independent research connected to the MFA’s collection of Netherlandish art. This may include preparation for submission of a PhD proposal, dissertation research and writing, and preparing a publication, among other research activities. As a multidisciplinary initiative, the Fellowship Program is open to individuals in a variety of professional and academic fields to encourage creative thinking and new scholarship. Fellows are drawn from a highly competitive international application pool and receive a workspace in the CNA Library. Compensation includes a salary and travel allowance as well as a generous benefits package.

Fellows share their research among themselves and with MFA staff, spark dialogue, and exchange ideas and opinions. They are fully incorporated into the work of the MFA and may consult on projects related to their research. The Department of Art at The University of Central Oklahoma, a NASAD accredited department, invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor in Advanced Drawing and Printmaking beginning August 2022. The Department seeks a candidate with a strong studio and teaching emphasis in drawing and printmaking with a contemporary fine arts approach. The ideal candidate will be able to approach drawing/printmaking in a contemporary manner while emphasizing strong formal, technical and conceptual skills as well as guide senior drawing students in their capstone projects. Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach three studio courses per semester in upper-level drawing courses, Intro to Printmaking and Intaglio as well as possible courses in Drawing I, Figure Drawing, or Color, (dependent on enrollment). The selected candidate will be expected to create a studio environment that encourages innovation, experimentation, and critical thinking and develop curriculum that is designed to introduce a variety of techniques, materials and processes. The position will be responsible for coordinating the drawing and printmaking area of emphasis, oversight of the drawing/printmaking adjunct faculty, and in collaboration with the art chair and faculty, participate in student recruitment. Additional responsibilities are expected in department, college, and university service.

Required Qualifications

An MFA in studio arts with an emphasis in advanced drawing and printmaking and two years full-time teaching experience at the college level is required. The candidate must have a strong knowledge of contemporary and historical issues in drawing and printmaking and possess a strong portfolio demonstrating a current and active exhibition and scholarly record.

Teaching, research, departmental/school and university experience is expected. Candidates must have an earned MFA degree (with a minimum of 60 graduate hours) awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval). **NOTE** If the MFA is not obtained and submitted by the time of employment, the position will change to TT-instructor for qualified candidates with a minimum of a master's degree.

The University of Dallas is seeking a dynamic and accomplished studio artist and teacher for a full-time, one year visiting position at the affiliate level in the field of Printmaking. The position requires teaching on the undergraduate (BA) level and graduate (MA/MFA) level and service to the department. The successful candidate will teach classes from foundations through graduate and all courses within the printmaking discipline. The candidate will contribute to the strength and energy of the Art Department and the University of Dallas community. The position requires the ability to serve on undergraduate and graduate committees for students in all five department areas. The Hanna Holborn Gray Special Collections Research Center is the principal repository of rare books, manuscripts, and archives in the University of Chicago Library.

The rare book collection includes titles from the fifteenth century to the present. Areas of strength include works and editions of Homer, classical literature and antiquities, the history of science and medicine, English and American literature, history, and economics, nineteenth-century English poetry, modern English and American poetry, historical children's books, Jewish life and culture, theology, Renaissance humanism, book arts and bindings, and the printed works of Frederick Chopin.

Fellowship Applications
Support for beginning scholars is a priority of the program. Applications from underrepresented groups are encouraged. Applications in the fields of late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century physics or physical chemistry, or nineteenth-century classical opera, will receive special consideration.

Awards will be made based on the applicant's ability to complete the proposed on-site research successfully within the time frame of the fellowship.
