Making an impression: British women printmakers in the Long Eighteenth Century

Applications are invited for an AHRC-funded PhD studentship researching the role, status and output of amateur and professional women printmakers in Britain during the long eighteenth century, drawing on the Victoria & Albert Museum’s strong collections of work by women printmakers of this period. The project will reconstruct and investigate the work of a number of women artists who have long been overlooked, thereby making a significant contribution to the history of art, design and the print.

This project will be supervised by Dr Kate Retford, Senior Lecturer in History of Art (Birkbeck College, University of London), who specialises in eighteenth-century British art, particularly gender and portraiture, and Dr Sarah Grant, Curator of Prints at the V&A, whose research interests encompass eighteenth-century prints, women artists and female Patronage.

General Purpose: In collaboration with the Curator of Photography and Media Arts and the Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings, the Collections Manager of Works on Paper will manage and care for the museum’s collection of over 15,000 prints, drawings, and photographs. The position involves a wide variety of duties. The primary responsibilities are to manage and care for the 15,000+ objects in the collection of works on paper (prints, drawings and photographs); conduct research on objects in the collection to create a precise and accurate archive of object files and maintain the TMS database; manage public access to the Herzfeld Print, Drawing, and Photography Study Center; manage all works on paper rotations; conduct class visits in the Herzfeld Foundation Study Center; provide administrative and curatorial support for the curators; manage and provide administrative support for Print Forum; manage and maintain safety, orderliness, and organization of works on paper storage area.

Education/Experience Requirements: BA in art history or museum studies (advanced degree in museum studies, collection management, or art history preferred but not required.); prior registrarial and/or collections management experience; art handling experience; administrative experience; database skills; specialized knowledge in at least one area of works on paper; excellent communication skills; ability to work with others; reading knowledge of German or French preferred.

GENERAL SUMMARY
The DIA seeks an Assistant, Associate or full Curator to serve as a full-time member of the Prints, Drawings and Photographs Department (PDP). The ideal candidate will have expertise and breadth of knowledge in Western art on paper dating from the Middle Ages through the present day.

Under the supervision of the Head of PDP, the Curator will oversee all aspects of the collection of works on paper, including prints, drawings, posters and artists’ books. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, organizing and overseeing permanent collection and traveling exhibitions; recommending new works for acquisition; and serving as co-liaison to the DIA’s Friends of Prints, Drawings and Photographs (FPDP), the department’s main auxiliary group.

QUALIFICATIONS
• M.A. in Art History and demonstrated expertise with works on paper; Ph.D. preferred
• Minimum three years of experience working in a museum
• Familiarity with the activities and operations of a large art museum
• Record of research and scholarship, with experience in organizing exhibitions and producing publications of high quality
• Commitment to engaging a varied public audience
• Exceptional writing skills and public speaking ability across diverse audiences
• Proven ability to work effectively and positively with other professional staff in a highly collaborative environment
• Proficiency in at least one foreign language

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct research on and assess condition of the collection toward the development of exhibitions, permanent gallery rotations, and potential loans
• Maintain current knowledge of the art market to recommend objects for the permanent collection and develop acquisition proposals
• Compile information pertinent to the identification and documentation of works of art and maintain appropriate object records in TMS collections database in accordance with DIA data and archival standards
• Collaborate with the Collections Management staff in installing artworks
• Work in close collaboration with the Conservation Department to regularly assess the conservation needs of the collection
• Develop familiarity with the DIA’s Collections Management Policy and assist the Registrar’s Department in producing supporting documentation for accessioning and deaccessioning works of art
• Conduct original research on the museum’s art collection and publish in scholarly journals, catalogues, and books
• Act as staff liaison to the FPDP and assist with organizing its activities and programs;
• Develop enrichments, including presentations and tours for members, volunteers and museum visitors, to facilitate community outreach
• Foster and maintain good working relationships with existing and potential patrons, trustees, and museum colleagues across the country and abroad, as well as with the academic community, art dealers, and collectors
• Work effectively with various museum departments to ensure that content related to the art under his/her purview is accurately represented in all museum print publications and other media
• Work collaboratively with educators in Learning and Audience Engagement to develop interpretive strategies and accompanying materials for permanent gallery projects and special exhibitions, as well as conduct training for gallery teachers and docents to support DIA’s school and related programs
• Collaborate across curatorial departments on exhibitions and acquisitions
• Participate in the day-to-day administration of the department, which includes responding to scholarly and public inquiries related to the collection and scheduling study room visits
• Represent the museum in professional organizations and at symposia and other scholarly meetings and events

How is the discourse of violence institutionalized? How is violence affecting art production systems and influencing art markets? How has violence become an important part of the visual history of Mexico? How is the normalization of violence through aesthetic principles critical to understand intention and representation?

Arquetopia SUMMER 2017 Special International Summer Academic Program (with Novohispanic Graphic Arts and Mural Art technique instruction, and self-directed Art Production) is a prestigious 6-week critical program that offers competitive professional opportunities for local and international emerging and mid-career artists, curators, art historians, and students age 22 and over.

This unique program offers critical methodologies to diverse art practices, exploring how violence is constructed through the language of aesthetics. The goal is to provide tools to understand visualities and gestures in art, while identifying institutional trivialization of intention, and representation in visual expression. Through the program, participants will conceptualize their art by engaging their practice in critical discussions. One of the central goals is to contextualize historical and contemporary articulations regarding the language of visual violence. The seminars and tours included in the program will explore the role of aesthetics in the construction of Mexico’s visual history and its categorization in the context of global visual culture. The program will also put into context the role of cultural institutions, such as museums and galleries, in the production of meaning through objects, social relations, and art consumption. Through hands-on workshops in collaboration with the Museum of Art of the Former Convent of Santa Monica, participants will have the opportunity to expand their art practice by exploring the artistic connections between the baroque graphic arts and the Novohispanic mural painting tradition.

The artists will take part in the process of electro-etching carried out by the specialist Crujera.

Description of residency program
An opportunity to take part in recent experiences in the process of electro-etching carried out by the artist and specialist Alfonso Crujera. The residency-workshop is located in the vicinity of the biosphere reserve of the island of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). With excellent views to the Atlantic Ocean is surrounded by a quiet, natural environment, ideal for reflection and creation.

Since 2002 the artist Alfonso Crujera has been working in this workshop introducing printmakers to the process of nontoxic etching. Today, the classic technique of intaglio engraving has been updated and reinvigorated by electrolytic etching, making the process of etching and engraving safer and ecologically sound while providing a wider range of expressive qualities and innovative possibilities on graphical effects. The use of this technique is simple and not necessarily expensive. The wide range of technical possibilities enables printmakers to develop their skills within and continuing their art process.

The personal assistance as well as the friendly and family-like atmosphere including visits to the local contemporary art centres creates a pleasant work-friendly atmosphere.

The Art Institute of Chicago seeks a graduate fellow to serve as project manager and contributing author for a digital publication project featuring the museum’s holdings of paintings, drawings, and pastels by James McNeill Whistler. With a primary affiliation in the Department of Prints and Drawings, the Lunder Consortium for Whistler Studies Graduate Fellow will work closely with curators and conservators in the departments of Prints and Drawings, American Art, and Conservation to conduct research related to these works, write catalogue entries, and otherwise contribute to the planning and execution of this publication project. The successful candidate will have completed a Master’s degree or M.Phil. in the fields of Art History or American studies. He or she will be able to demonstrate specialized knowledge related to American, French, or British nineteenth-century art.

As a member of the Lunder Consortium for Whistler Studies, the Art Institute of Chicago maintains one of the world’s most significant holdings of works by James McNeill Whistler. Together with other Lunder Consortium members—the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Colby College Museum of Art, and the University of Glasgow—the Art Institute seeks to nurture, produce, and disseminate original scholarship and critical analysis of James McNeill Whistler and his international artistic circles. In addition to the paintings, drawings, and pastels, which will be featured as the subject of this publication, the Art Institute’s collection also includes nearly complete holdings of Whistler’s etchings and lithographs. The opportunity to access these collections—as well as the museum’s broad holdings in American and European art of the long nineteenth century—will complement the project-specific work of the successful candidate.

Qualifications:

Excellent research and writing skills will be essential to this position.
Museum experience and previous experience with project management also preferred.

The Medical Historical Library of the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library at Yale University is pleased to announce its tenth annual Ferenc Gyorgyey Research Travel Award.

The Medical Historical Library, located in New Haven, Connecticut, holds one of the country’s largest collections of rare medical books, journals, prints, photographs, and pamphlets. Special strengths are the works of Hippocrates, Galen, Vesalius, Boyle, Harvey, Culpeper, Priestley, and S. Weir Mitchell, and works on anatomy, anesthesia, and smallpox inoculation and vaccination. The Library owns over fifty medieval and renaissance manuscripts, Arabic and Persian manuscripts, and over 300 medical incunabula. The notable Clements C. Fry Collection of Prints and Drawings has over 2,500 fine prints, drawings, and posters from the 15th century to the present on medical subjects. The library also holds a great collection of tobacco advertisements, patent medicine ephemera, and a large archive of materials from Dr. Harvey Cushing, one of the founding fathers of neurosurgery.

The 2017-2018 travel grant is available to historians, medical practitioners, and other researchers who wish to use the collections of the Medical Historical Library. There is a single award of up to $1,500 for one week of research during the academic fiscal year July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018. Funds may be used for transportation, housing, food, and photographic reproductions. The award is limited to residents of the United States and Canada. Applicants will need to apply through our fellowship site, and upload a curriculum vitae and project description, including the relevance of the Medical Historical Library collections to the project, as well as provide two references attesting to the particular project. Preference will be given to applicants beyond commuting distance to the Medical Historical Library. This award is for use of Medical Historical special collections and is not intended for primary use of special collections in other libraries at Yale. Applications are due by Monday, MAY 1st, 2017. They will be considered by a committee and the candidates will be informed by June 2nd, 2017. Winners may be asked to do a blog post discussing their research.

Internship Description:

The Studio Assistant Intern(s) will work with the Artistic Director/Master Printer, Assistant Printer, and Studio Manager to prepare and execute projects in all areas of operation.

Intern(s) will be expected to:

Assist with the day-to-day studio operations
Assist in overseeing the safe use of the shop, materials, and equipment
Assist in ordering inventory, stocking supplies, and researching projects, techniques, and equipment
Assist with projects, visiting artists, and events
Assist with other projects as needed
Intern Requirements:

Interns must be able to commit to an average of 11 weeks for a minimum of 15 scheduled hours per week. The best intern is not always the person with the most printmaking experience! Printmaking experience is helpful, but dependability, initiative, attention to detail, organizational skills and the ability/willingness to learn are paramount. Additionally, strong interpersonal skills, interest in printmaking practices, and the ability to work well with others are also important. Preference is given to graduate students, upper level undergraduates (junior or senior) and those wishing to work consecutive terms. (Students in their last quarter or semester should seriously consider whether their schedule will reasonably accommodate an internship requiring at least 15 hours per week.)

Internship duration: One semester minimum (11 weeks).

The Cincinnati Art Museum has an opening for a part-time, temporary summer intern to work in the Prints department.

POSITION SUMMARY

This internship will assist the Curator of Prints to research and catalogue the Joel and Bernice Weisman Collection of 800 Japanese prints into the permanent collection. This will be a hands - on experience with Japanese prints dating from the 1760s through the twentieth century. A reading knowledge of Japanese and a general background in Japanese print history, history and literature is desirable.

Schedule: 12 weeks, 6/1/2017 - 8/31/2017, 35 hours per week, paid position.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

Undergraduate degree, more preferred. Language-Japanese desirable.
