Curatorial Fellowship at the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts

The UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum, a significant collection of over 45,000 prints, drawings, and photographs dating from the Renaissance to the present, is pleased to announce a paid fellowship opportunity for the 2016-2017 academic year. The fellow will be responsible for researching and cataloging selected areas of the collection in preparation for online collections projects. Additional responsibilities may include giving class presentations and gallery talks, answering queries about the collection, and interacting with scholars, students, and the public on matters concerning the collection.

Term length and compensation:
The fellow will work 32 hours a week for 8 months beginning September 2015. The selected candidate will receive a $30,000.00 salary. The fellow may be eligible for an additional travel and research allowance depending on available funds.
Cataloging Project Description:
The Fellow will be working on extended research projects devoted to one or more of the following collection areas:
• Approximately 160 Old Master drawings (including French, German, Flemish, and Italian examples from the 15th through 18th centuries)
• Approximately 1600 ornament prints by French, German, and Italian artists spanning the 16th through the 18th centuries
• Approximately 3,000 modern and contemporary French, German, and American prints, including substantial holdings of German Expressionist prints formerly belonging to Fred Grunwald as well as works by former students and faculty of the UCLA Art Department

Desired qualifications:

The ideal fellowship candidate will be an advanced graduate student in art history or recent PH.D. who has experience with or knowledge of works on paper derived from coursework, independent research, prior museum experience, or some combination of the above. Ability to read German is required; additional reading knowledge of French preferred. Some familiarity with digital humanities research is welcome but not required. The ideal candidate will be organized, meticulous, and capable of working successfully both independently and in collaboration with others, and will possess a demonstrated ability to conduct independent scholarly research.

Wolfgang Ratjen Award 2016, Award for Distinguished Research in the Graphic Arts

The Wolfgang Ratjen Award is an annual award for distinguished research in the field of graphic arts. The prize, funded by the Foundation Wolfgang Ratjen, is curated and presented by CONIVNCTA FLORESCIT Friends of the "Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte".

The purpose of this award, which honours the memory of the collector Wolfgang Ratjen (1943-1997), is to encourage younger scholars to address neglected topics and to bring the results of their work to the attention of a broader public.

Consideration will be given to a Ph.D. dissertation, M.A. thesis, or scholarly article of larger scope, dealing with art historical questions which involve drawings or prints in Western art. Applicants should have an academic background.

The winning candidate, chosen by an independent committee of scholars, will receive € 5,000, and is expected to spend three months conducting research at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich.

Candidates for the award are requested to send a copy of the research paper in question, along with a curriculum vitae detailing academic qualifications, copies of certificates and a list of publications to: Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, to the attention of Prof. Dr. Iris Lauterbach, Katharina-von-Bora-Str. 10, 80333 Munich/Germany.

2016 Mark Samuels Lasner Fellowship in Printing History

The American Printing History Association (APHA) invites applications for the 2016 Mark Samuels Lasner Fellowship in Printing History for the study of printing history. An award of up to $2,000 is available for research in any area of the history of printing in any form, including all the arts and technologies relevant to printing, the book arts, and letter forms. Applications are especially welcome from those working in the area of American printing history, but the subject of research has no geographical or chronological limitations, and may be national or regional in scope, biographical, analytical, technical, or bibliographical in nature. Study related to the history of printing with a recognized printer or book artist may also be supported. APHA fellowships are open to individuals of any nationality. Applicants need not be academics and an advanced degree is not required. The fellowship can be used to pay for travel, living, and other expenses

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks applicants for The Claire W. and Richard P. Morse Curatorial Research Fellowship for Special Projects in Prints, Drawings, Watercolors, and Illustrated Books. This 9-month appointment will work closely with the Peter and Pamela Voss Curator of Prints and Drawings and the Chair of the Department. The fellow will research, catalogue, and interpret some area of the MFA’s renowned collection of works on paper, to be determined both by the needs of the Museum and the specialized knowledge of the successful candidate. Previous projects have included cataloguing the MFA’s important collection of illustrated books and researching lesser-known aspects of our holdings of prints by Francisco Goya.

Applicants must have completed a master’s program concentrating in art history or a relevant subject area, or possess equivalent experience. Demonstrated interest in the graphic arts is preferred, as is experience using database systems, and a record of scholarly achievement.

The fellowship is a 9-month, 14-hour per week, term position with the possibility of renewal. Compensation includes salary, appropriate benefits, and some funds for travel and research materials.

The Saint Louis Art Museum is seeking an A.W. Mellon Fellow for Prints, Drawings and Photographs. This is a full-time, limited term (3-year) benefited position reporting to the Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs. The main purpose of this Fellowship is to research and evaluate collections of late 20th and early 21st-century American prints in the Museum and in other Saint Louis collections, and to collaborate with the Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs in the organization of an exhibition and catalogue based on the material. During the 3-year term, the Fellow will work with members of the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs as well as staff throughout the Museum and colleagues and collectors in the community

M.A. in modern and contemporary American Art History or related field required; Ph.D. and specialization in the history of prints and printmaking strongly preferred. Terra Foundation for American Art Travel Grant

To encourage and enrich international partnerships and to deepen research and dialogue, for the next two years the Terra Foundation will offer grants for US curators working on historical American art topics to travel outside the United States. Grants may be used to seek curatorial and/or institutional partners and venues; conduct research in public and private art collections, archives, and libraries; and meet with specialists based outside the United States. The foundation will continue to offer Curatorial Travel Grants for travel to the United States, as well as Pre-Exhibition Convening Grants.

The Ephemera Society of America invites applications for the Philip Jones Fellowship for the Study of Ephemera.

This competition, now in its eighth year, is open to any interested individual or organization for the study of any aspect of ephemera, defined as minor (and sometimes major) everyday documents intended for one-time or short-term use. It is expected that this study will advance one or more aims of the Society:

To cultivate and encourage interest in ephemera and the history identified with it
To further the understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of ephemera by people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of interest
To promote the personal and institutional collection, preservation, exhibition, and research of ephemeral materials
