Call for Curatorial Proposals

Print Center New York
New York, NY, United States
Due date: 04/06/2025
In celebration of Print Center New York’s 25 year history of platforming guest curators, we invite emerging and early-career curators to submit letters of interest for exhibition opportunities beginning in 2028. Through this curatorial open call—the first in our organization’s history—we aim to identify promising voices and areas of research that are pushing our field forward, and to accelerate professional opportunities for curators who are building the print exhibition and scholarship of tomorrow.

Print Center New York’s curatorial program aims to generate new knowledge and understanding of printmaking’s potential by: locating print within broader artistic, historical, and cultural contexts; re-examining and expanding established histories and narratives; fostering cross-disciplinary conversation; and making print visible and accessible to non-specialist audiences.

Program Features:

We work closely with guest curators to realize their projects at their fullest potential.

Financial Support: Guest curators receive an unrestricted curatorial fee (beginning at $5,000 and scaling upward), plus, if needed, an additional travel budget that can be used for curatorial research and related exhibition travel. Print Center New York also covers all exhibition, publication, and public programming costs.

Mentorship Group: Print Center convenes a working group of subject-area experts who act as a sounding board at key intervals in a project’s development.

Comprehensive Guidance: Our curatorial staff provides guidance and feedback on areas such as project conceptualization, writing, and public engagement development.

Full Production Support: Our team handles project management, logistics, and budget administration, and all aspects of exhibition production and installation, outreach, and publicity.

Our exhibitions are on view in Print Center New York’s main exhibition space, the Jordan Schnitzer Gallery, on the ground floor of 24th Street in Chelsea. The gallery is about 1800 square feet, and floor plans will be shared with curators we invite to submit full proposals. We are able to borrow works from a range of lenders, including institutional/museum collections.
Our exhibitions are on view for about 12 weeks and are accompanied by a roster of public programming and, typically, a modest publication.

Curator Eligibility:

Open to emerging and early-career curators based anywhere in the United States.
We define “emerging and early career” as those with less than 15 years of professional arts experience.
Curators must be present for key dates such as exhibition installation, opening, and select programming.
Anyone with an SSN or ITIN is eligible to receive payment.
Artists are welcome to apply if the project does not include their own work.

How to Apply:

Submit to to programs@printcenternewyork.org with the subject “Curatorial Open Call Letter of Interest.” Please include:
A brief letter of interest (no more than 500 words) describing your project.
Current resume/CV, to programs@printcenternewyork.org with “Curatorial Open Call Letter of Interest” in the subject line.

Letters of interest should outline a concise and compelling pitch for an exhibition the curator would like to develop, including the artist(s) the curator is considering. Please do not send checklists or image decks at this stage.

Call for Curators: The 2020 SGC International Open Portfolio Exhibitions

The 2020 SGC International Open Portfolio Exhibitions
Sheraton Convention Center, Miramar Convention District
San Juan, Puerto Rico
04/04/2020 to 04/05/2020
Due date: 11/15/2019
SGC International hosts an annual conference for printmakers. The 2020 conference, Puertográfico, will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, April 1-4, 2020. The Open Portfolio event at the annual SGC International conference provides a unique opportunity for conference attendees to present their prints to their peers, their mentors, and the general public. Members show their prints on tables alongside one another in 1-hour sessions, in one large event hall. In this jam-packed, exciting event, thousands of prints can be seen within a four-hour period. The conference’s 1200+ attendees are free to walk through, view the works on display, and meet the artists.

From the SGCI website:
The printmaking world doesn’t just need artists and educators—it needs it needs writers, gallerists, and curators.

This year SGCI is putting a new twist on the Open Portfolio! We’re transforming it into a live, malleable “happening” where exhibitions will be culled from the work shown by Open Portfolio participants and featured at the conference as the 2020 Open Portfolio Exhibitions. The Open Portfolio will provide content for the conference by highlighting the work and focusing upon the ideas evidenced in the moment at our annual gathering.

To cultivate the roles of curators, gallerists, and writers, both within our community and beyond, SGC International and Puertográfico are seeking members interested in being a part of the three curatorial teams that will present the 2020 Open Portfolio Exhibitions.

Each curatorial team will include:
- one lead curator
- one graduate student curatorial assistant
- two undergraduate student curatorial assistants
- one student critic

The lead curators of the three teams will include one Puerto Rican Curator (external-to-SGCI, receiving a $500 honorarium), one Open Call Curator (external-to-SGCI, receiving a conference waiver, lodging at the conference hotel, airfare, and a $500 honorarium), and one SGCI Student Curator (receiving a $500 honorarium).

Exhibition themes or topics will be determined by the curators and curators must choose pieces to be exhibited from the works shown at Open Portfolio. The show is not to be worked out in advance of Open Portfolio. The curator, however, may have an organizing principle in mind.

Together each curatorial team (minus the team critic) will:
- mine the morning’s three Open Portfolio sessions to form an exhibition;
- develop their exhibition on Thursday afternoon;
- notify artists of their participation in exhibitions by Thursday evening at 7:00 PM;
- use Friday to plan their exhibitions, prepare curatorial statements, and prepare thoughts for the Curators’ Forum;
- present their reflections upon the Open Portfolio at the Saturday morning Curators’ Forum;
- hang the shows on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday evening the exhibitions will open as a part of the Puertográfico closing festivities—The 2020 Open Portfolio Exhibitions, the SGC International Awards Ceremony, and the Printmakers Ball.

The 2020 SGCI Open Portfolio Exhibitions will add an element of spontaneity to the conference and ensure that it is about printmaking right now! By the end of the week, Open Portfolio participants may find themselves with an exhibition in San Juan; emerging artists interested in curation will gain experience from working with those already in the field; artists and curators will make connections; and the membership at large will get to watch it all unfold.

The following positions are open for applications:
- Open Call Curator (external-to-SGCI)
- SGCI Student Curator
- Graduate Student Curatorial Assistant
- Undergraduate Student Curatorial Assistant
- Student Critic

Please submit your CV and a statement of intent (300 word max) including your experience working with prints, drawings, artist's books, and works on paper through the online form at the 'External Link' below.
