Artist Residency

Frans Masereel Centrum
Kasterlee, Belgium
Application due: 05/10/2022
Our Artist Residency program welcomes contemporary artists to realize an individual, multiform, print-related project that matches their artistic practice. The focus of the Artist Residency program lies on development and creation in one or more of our workshops.

Usually 9 artists work and stay at the same time at the site of the Frans Masereel Centrum, so that there is always enough personal space for concentration and creation, alternated with informal moments of consultation, meeting and feedback among peers from all over the world. Our location in a wooded area is for many an extra asset.

No prior knowledge of printmaking techniques is required and the studio staff will be available for technical assistance. However, residents are expected to be able to work autonomously and realize their project independently. At the Frans Masereel Centrum, you will have access to our various printmaking facilities, including typography with wooden or lead typesetting, intaglio, screenprinting, riso and lasercut. Some artists prefer to develop a more process-oriented research project. In that case, prior knowledge of printmaking techniques is required.

Residency Program
WEEK 1:
Masterclasses on the printmaking techniques of your choosing. Sometimes together with your fellow artists-in-residence, always with one of our studio experts.

WEEK 2, 3 & 4:
Developing your project, with the full(-time) support of our studio staff.

WEEK 5:
Finalisation and reflection during a collection moment (a feedback and archive session with the studio staff).

Each residency program also includes individual feedback moments with prominent artists and art professionals, such as curators, gallery owners and art critics.

Price
€ 350 per week

(Incl. workshop facilities, use of equipment, basic materials and accommodation in our fully equipped bungalows.)

How to sign up?
Applying is done digitally and in English via an online application form, where you can also upload your files.

Besides an artist statement (about your work in general) and a project proposal (stating the intended goals and purposes of your stay, as well as your motivation), the application should also contain documentation of recent work (dating back no longer than 5 years) and a brief CV.

The application period for the residency of 2023 will open on April 1st 2022. The deadline is May 10th 2022.

Note: Max. 10 MB per file.
Criteria
The selection committee will assess your application based on the following criteria:
– The quality of your work, your artist’s attitude, and ambition, your visual and reflective skills as well as your desire and capacity to experiment and challenge your practice.
– The scope and significance of your proposal for a residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum.
– Your motivation.

The outcome of the selection procedure will be communicated mid-August.
