Yaddo is a retreat for artists located on a 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. Its mission is to nurture the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without interruption in a supportive environment.

Yaddo offers residencies to professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in one or more of the following disciplines: choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Artists may apply individually or as members of collaborative teams of two or three persons. They are selected by panels of other professional artists without regard to financial means. Residencies last from two weeks to two months and include room, board, and a studio.

The next application deadline is January 5, 2022. The portal for that cycle opened November 1, 2021.

Overview

The Artist Studio Program was launched in 2000 in response to the crisis of available affordable space for artists living and working in New York City. The program provides six eligible artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space accessible 24/7 and a fellowship. The program runs for a 50 week period from September 1 to August 15. The studios are located on the lower level of our building at 92 Plymouth Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn and range in size from 250 to 300 square feet. The program does not provide living space.

Smack Mellon’s Artist Studio Program supports emerging or early career artists. Applicants must be legal residents of NYC for one year prior to the application deadline and be residing in NYC at the time of the application process and for the term of the residency. All applicants must be United States citizens or legal Permanent Residents of the United States, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree program, and must be able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the Smack Mellon residency.


Production Facilities

Artists also have access to shared facilities that include: a state-of-the-art digital production lab, including a set of 27″ iMac workstations professionally configured for video and graphics editing, calibrated monitors, HD projector, stereo monitor speakers, flatbed film scanners, a wide-format photo printer, a color laser printer, and wireless internet access; a fabrication shop including table saw, bandsaw, drill press, belt-sander and welding equipment. Our staff is on-hand to provide technical support and to respond to the studio needs of our resident artists.


Special Notes

Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it. Not all studios have windows. Artists will not be permitted to choose their studio. Please also note that due to the possibility of flooding in our basement studios, we strongly recommend that artists keep anything valuable off the floor at all times; therefore artists accustomed to working on the floor should think carefully about whether our studios will meet their needs.

Open Studios and Studio Visitors

Smack Mellon hosts two Open Studio events annually, as well as sponsored visits from curators, critics and gallerists, which provide significant exposure and invaluable career building opportunities. Please see the list below of studio visitors.

In addition to monthly studio hours, artists are expected to help at Smack Mellon’s benefit the first weekend in May and make themselves available for studio visits with school groups and other tour groups outside of Open Studio event hours.

Description:
Inaugurated in 2016, the Borgeson Artist in Residence Program is a twelve-week summer artist residency for early and mid-career artists, hosted by the Department of Art and Art History at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, that runs from mid-May through mid-August of each year.

The residency provides housing, studio space in the Department of Art and Art History, a financial stipend and a one-month exhibition at Hope College’s 1,300 square foot De Pree Art Gallery at the conclusion of the residency. The exhibition opens in late August and runs through September. The residency stipend is paid in two installments, at the beginning of the residency and in September, at the close of the exhibition.

The resident artist is expected to work in their studio at the De Pree Art Center throughout the residency and to be available for two- three student or community-centered events. This might include a workshop, lecture, critiques or studio visits with students, alumni, or the broader West Michigan community.

As part of the residency’s goal to create opportunities for our students and the larger campus community, the department hosts an artist’s lecture, closing reception and related programming in conjunction with the AIR exhibition in September.

The Keyholder Residency Program offers emerging artists free 24-hour access to printmaking facilities to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. Residencies are free and one year long, starting on April 1st and October 1st each year, and they take place in the shared Artists’ Studio, including the solvent/etching area and the darkroom.

Keyholders work independently, in a productive atmosphere alongside other contemporary artists. Artists from all disciplines are eligible to apply; print-making skills are not required, but some familiarity with the medium is recommended. Basic instruction in printmaking techniques is available for new Keyholders. Technical assistance is not included in the program, but is available at additional cost.

Participation is competitive. Applications are evaluated by a rotating committee of artists, critics, curators, and art professionals based on the quality of submitted artwork. A total of 8 artists are awarded the residency annually. Artists based in the New York City area and without access to a studio space are encouraged to apply.

The Studio Workspace Residency is an opportunity for artists to create new work and fully immerse themselves in WSW’s supportive environment. We invite applications from artists at any stage of their careers. This residency gives artists the gift of time, an uninterrupted period to live and work away from the stresses of daily life. Artists may choose to work in any one or more of our studios: intaglio, letterpress, papermaking, screenprinting, darkroom photography, or ceramics.

Artists receive a thorough studio orientation and are expected to work independently, although studio staff is available to provide assistance. Deep technical assistance can be arranged for an additional fee. Artists must provide their own materials, some of which can be purchased from WSW.

As of 2019, all workspace residencies are fully subsidized! This means that while artists are still responsible for their own travel, materials, meals, and other personal incidentals while in residence, WSW provides housing and studio space at no cost.

Tusen Takk’s residencies are geared for artists to explore new ideas or expand current work. We look for ideas and work that will affirm and enrich the human spirit, giving form to chaos and perception to beauty.

Tusen Takk was designed to host one resident, or two in collaboration, for residencies between three and eight weeks. The single most important qualification for artists invited to Tusen Takk is that they have created a body of work that exemplifies excellence and has (or could) significantly contribute(d) to their artistic field. Tusen Takk welcomes applications from both emerging and established visual artists in photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting, as well as creative writers and music composers.

Artists should be self-motivated so they can be productive in the isolation afforded by a residency with a giving spirit that’s exemplified by a willingness to share insights with audiences about their work and processes. While in residence, artists are encouraged to engage with the local arts community; this could take the shape of a small-scale workshop or studio visit, or a public artist’s talk, exhibition, or performance, either virtually or in collaboration with one of the Foundation’s partner organizations. Applications are due on July 15, 2021 for residencies between June 2022 and June 2023.

Highlights of the studios include: a digital imaging studio outfitted with two Epson P9000 commercial edition printers and two Epson 9880 printers (all with a maximum output width of 44"), an etching studio designed to make photogravures with a 30" x 50" etching press and 24” x 36” NuArc platemaker, and a darkroom with a 16' long sink and three enlargers.

Individual two or three week artist residencies are available throughout the year, scheduled around artist project times. Residencies will be awarded by a jury appointed by the Director to applicants who successfully demonstrate a need for working space at the print studio and have a strong, consistent portfolio of primarily print-based work. The decisions of the jury will be final, but applicants are allowed to apply more than once.

Awarded artist residents will be allocated two or three weeks at the studio, including some materials (except plates) as well as housing in the upstairs apartment and meals. Residents will be able to use the press for four hours during normal working hours (9 – 5, M – F) and at will for the remainder of each day. In addition they will receive one hour of collaborative planning time with the master printer each working day, and will have the opportunity to utilize the staff for a small hourly fee. At the end of the residency, Oehme Graphics will choose up to one half of the finished pieces to be placed in the collection and made available for sale. Oehme Graphics will host an informal one night exhibition of selected unframed works from the residency, with an opening reception and artist talk.

The goal of the WAP Residency is to connect Tiger Lily with a local artist who is passionately committed to their work and their artistic community, interested in seeking out possibilities for expanding their current work into printmaking or challenging their existing love of printmaking through a focused residency project. Through their creative drive and work ethic, the artist serves as a role model for the members of Tiger Lily Press and is asked to engage with the greater community to increase awareness of and education in the field of printmaking.

The Working Artist Program Residency was established in 2012. The duration of the residency is nine months, spanning February-November. Out of town applicants should note that housing is not provided and is the responsibility of the artist.

Benefits of the WAP Residency include:

- Write a short personal statement at the conclusion of the residency reflecting on the experience, to be submitted to the Tiger Lily Press Board for archival purposes
- Donate one print created during the residency to Tiger Lily Press for archival purposes

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the spirit of accessibility, we are excited to share the PSLA Remote Residency program for Summer 2021.

Three selected artists will have their print proposals published by our master printmakers. This award includes a $1500 materials stipend. Selected artists will receive remote project consultation, file preparation assistance, and all support required to make their unique project successful. All printing, assembling, shipping and handling will be covered by PSLA.

We encourage you to interpret this printmaking/publishing residency as experimentally or traditionally as you want. The only limitations are our in-house printing facilities. This includes: screenprinting, risograph, etching, relief, bookbinding, oversized digital and giclee printing.

Artists from around the world are welcome to apply. The residency is remote with no travel or contact involved. Communications will take place over zoom, email and phone call.
