Universal Limited Art Editions, the First Twenty-Five Years – Update to the Art Institute of Chicago’s catalogue raisonné

New York City, NY, United States
A vital update to the Art Institute of Chicago’s catalogue raisonné, Universal Limited Art Editions, the First Twenty-Five Years (1957-1982) is now available in a pre-publication edition.

Researched and compiled over eleven years by Tony Towle, Secretary and Administrative Assistant to Tatyana Grosman from 1964-1981, the letter-sized, 28-page booklet can be kept under the catalogue’s front cover for easy reference to its 600 errors and corrections.

The booklet, presently in a proof (trial) edition of 50 copies, will be succeeded by an official edition; the information, however, will not change from the proof edition, but the price likely will.

The few remaining booklets are being offered at $30 each, including first class mail in the United States. Please send an email to reserve a copy or to request additional information.

Publication: Printing Colour 1700 – 1830, ed. Margaret Morgan Grasselli and Elizabeth Savage

Oxford, United Kingdom
Printing Colour 1700-1830 offers a broad-ranging examination of the rich period of invention, experimentation and creativity surrounding colour printing in Europe between two critically important developments, four-colour separation printing around 1710, and chromolithography around 1830. Its 28 field-defining contributions, by 26 leading experts, expand the corpus far beyond the beautiful, already well-studied images produced in European hubs like London and Paris. The chapters unveil the explosive growth in the production and marketing of colour prints at this pivotal moment. They address the numerous scientific and technological advances that fed the burgeoning popularity for such diverse colour-printed consumer goods as clothing, textiles, wallpapers, and ceramics. They recontextualise the rise in colour-printed paper currencies, book endpapers and typography, and ephemera, including lottery tickets and advertisements. This landmark volume, of 450 pages with 350 colour illustrations, launches colour printing of the long 18th century as an interdisciplinary field of study, opening new avenues for research across historical and scientific fields.

Brand X Editions Archive Established at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Philadelphia, PA, United States
The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) is thrilled to announce the establishment of the Brand X Editions Archive with a gift from Robert Blanton and Brand X Editions, the globally recognized New York-based print studio and publisher founded by master printer Blanton. The gift currently includes more than 350 screenprints by Mickalene Thomas, Rashid Johnson, Joel Mesler, Adam Pendleton, Alex Katz, Chuck Close, Jenny Holzer, Emily Mae Smith, Tschabalala Self, and many others. The Archive will expand over the years to include new works produced by the studio.

To celebrate the gift, the PMA will host a Brand X Editions retrospective exhibition in 2025 and publish a richly illustrated catalogue providing a history of the studio and a broad overview of the Archive. The Archive and related documentation will be available for consultation in the PMA’s Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs and an associated database of the works will be accessible for online research and study.

“We are grateful to receive this gift from BXE and Robert Blanton,” said Sasha Suda, the George D. Widener Director and CEO of the PMA. “This gesture is both a coup and an honor for the PMA in light of Brand X Editions’ tremendous impact on contemporary screenprinting. We are proud to give these important works a permanent home.”

“Robert Blanton and his team of chromists and master printers at Brand X have been at the cutting edge of the screenprint medium for over four decades. They have pushed the traditional screenprint into areas of artistic expression that make it a vital medium for 21st Century artists” said Louis Marchesano, the Audrey and William H. Helfand Senior Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. “The addition of the Brand X Editions Archive to the collection of the PMA goes a long way toward building an authoritative resource on screenprinting and we’re more than delighted to provide a home where these works can be studied and exhibited for generations to come. Because Brand X has not only published prints, but also produced prints for other publishers, the texture and details of their technical and artistic accomplishments haven't been fully understood until now.”

The history of the PMA’s Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs is closely connected to the history of the screenprint (or silkscreen) medium and boasts one of the foremost collections of early screenprinting from the 1930s and ’40s. The first head of the department, Carl Zigrosser, who was hired in 1940, championed the medium and was closely associated with influential pioneers, including Guy Macoy who produced what are believed to be the first artistic screenprints in the history of art.

Says studio founder Robert Blanton, “Brand X has been very fortunate to work with many of the most talented and respected artists for nearly half a century. During that time, our team of unequalled printmakers has constantly sought to practice the traditional art of screenprinting at its highest level, while expanding the possibilities of what a screenprint can be. I am proud of the work we do, and with the establishment of the Brand X Editions Archive at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, we will be working with the PMA to help broaden the knowledge of this beautiful and nuanced medium.”

Israel Museum, Jerusalem acquisition of my triptych: “Rumor”

Jerusalem, Israel
I am pleased to share the The Israel Museum, Jerusalem acquisition of my triptych : Rumor, 2017, 300 x 168 cm, 120 x 67in, to it's permanent collection.
Rumor, is a significant work in my thematic and formalistic journey. It is first and foremost the expression of my continued preoccupation with the local and broader political and moral complexities, encompassing not just ethnic conflicts but the very fundaments of land, water and time. The millennia of territorial struggles; ever-present in the most rudimentary daily realities. Rumor was inspired [Or rather triggered] by a local dispute between Palestinians and Jewish settlers, over access to natural springs in the West Bank; while water rights around the world, are increasingly being weaponized as climate change destabilizes weather patterns.

Bethany Collins’s Performance of
America: A Hymnal

New York, NY, United States
In conjunction with Visual Record: The Materiality of Sound in Print, Print Center New York is pleased to present a new performance of Bethany Collins’s project America: A Hymnal, which offers a chronological retelling of American history, politics, and culture through one song.

Over time, “My Country ’Tis of Thee” (also known as “America”) has seen its title and lyrics re-written at least 100 times in support of passionately held causes—from temperance and suffrage to abolition and even the Confederacy. During this one-hour performance at the Fifteenth Street Meetinghouse of The Religious Society of Friends (also known as Quakers), singers from The Unsung Collective will sing a single version of the anthem, “War” from 1862, in a myriad of musical forms.

About The Unsung Collective
The Unsung, directed by Tyrone Clinton, is a community-based music collective devoted to celebrating stories of the Black experience. They are a non-profit dedicated to serving the local NYC community by expanding the confines of the Western musical canon and fostering educational relationships with those who are “willing to listen.”
