Samuel H. Kress Predoctoral Fellowship 2019–20

The Drawing Institute will award one Samuel H. Kress Predoctoral Fellowship to an advanced-level graduate student who has completed all course work and exams and is currently engaged in carrying out research leading to the completion of a doctoral dissertation in the history of art, some component of which pertains to the history, theory, collecting, function or interpretation of old master and/or modern drawings.

Requirements
The Samuel H. Kress Predoctoral Fellow is expected to spend her/his fellowship period in residence at the Morgan Library & Museum. The majority of the Fellow’s time will be spent on the dissertation and related research projects, but the Fellow is expected to participate fully in the intellectual life of the Morgan and to attend Drawing Institute programs during her/his tenure. The Fellow may be asked to assist in the planning and implementation of Drawing Institute programs.

The Fellow will present a progress report on his/her research at the conclusion of the fellowship.

Stipend: $20,000 for 6 months (to fall between September 2019 and June 2020), plus a travel allowance intended to support or subsidize a short research trip.

General Information:
Health insurance is not provided by the Morgan.
The Fellow is expected to make his/her own travel and housing arrangements.
For foreign applicants, non-financial assistance with procuring a visa is provided.
Fellowship is non-renewable.

Applicants are asked to submit the following:
a cover letter addressing the applicant’s area of interest and expertise
a curriculum vitae
a research proposal (maximum 3 pages, double-spaced) specifying what the applicant wishes to accomplish during the fellowship period and detailing how he/she will utilize the Morgan’s resources and collections
a writing sample, in English
two letters from academic or professional references in support
of the proposed project
