Rare Books Librarian

The Department of the History and Philosophy of Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine is conducting a search for a Rare Books Librarian. This individual will lead the Clendening History of Medicine Library, with its superb collection of rare books in the history of medicine dating back to the fifteenth century as well as works of modern scholarship in the history of medicine, medical humanities, and medical ethics.

Required Qualifications:
- ALA-Accredited Master's Degree in Library and/or Information Studies.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in library administration and familiarity with the management of special collections and rare books, including reference services.
- Must be able to work on location.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with one or more languages in addition to English.
- Background in history, humanities, medical sciences, or literature.
- Experience in handling and conservation of rare books.

Job Duties :
- Develops, promotes, and manages the collections of primary and secondary sources, reference materials, and journals in the Clendening History of Medicine Library. These responsibilities include working with visiting researchers, students, faculty, and global patrons on research projects; collaborating to further collection goals and stewardship plans; selecting primary and secondary sources for acquisition; promoting public awareness and appreciation for the collections; and supervising access to rare books and materials.
- The Clendening Library is a resource shared by the University of Kansas Medical Center community. The rare books librarian will develop collaborative relationships with faculty and staff in the School of Nursing, the School of Health Professions and the School of Medicine and develop library programing that reaches across all three schools.
- Supervises a part time Assistant Librarian who also serves as the Curator of the Clendening History of Medicine Museum, with independent responsibility for those collections. The Rare Books Librarian and assistant librarian will collaborate in cataloging, patron services, security, preservation, collection care and maintenance, processing journals and support for exhibitions. - - In addition, the Rare Books Librarian and Assistant Librarian also oversee student workers, interns, and maintenance contractors.
- Acts as liaison to University of Kansas Medical Center Dykes Library staff to facilitate cataloging, deaccession, interlibrary loan, and related special projects.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures for the Clendening Library and Museum in conjunction with the Chair of the Department of History & Philosophy of Medicine.
- Manages the general operating and facilities budgets for the library, in collaboration with the Department Administrator.
- Expected to manifest values of diversity, equity, and inclusiveness in the development and use of the historical collections.
- Serves on medical center committees and working groups as appropriate.
- Participates in relevant professional organizations.
- Takes the lead in recruiting and hiring students or limited term employees to serve specific needs within the library and museum.
- Other duties as assigned.
