Ottoman Opulence

Southeast Missouri invites you to the opening reception of ‘Ottoman Opulence (and a few toasters)’, a solo exhibition featuring artist Myles Calvert. Born in Collingwood, Ontario, Calvert attended the University of Guelph, focusing on printmaking and art history, and later completed his MA in printmaking at Camberwell College of Art (University for the Arts, London). During this time he worked for the National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square, at Sussex Coast College in Hastings, East Sussex, and as Duty Manager for the Jerwood Gallery. Calvert’s work explores the relationships that develop between everyday objects and popular culture interferences. Following the ideals of Romanticism, emphasis is given to an individual experience of emotion. A moment of spontaneity allows for humour and a subtle twist to avoid an overwhelming glorification of the past through objects of the mundane.

Opening reception: Oct 5, 5-9pm
