Morse Curatorial Research Fellow, Prints and Drawings

The Department of Prints and Drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks applicants for up to two Claire W. and Richard P. Morse Curatorial Research Fellowships for Special Projects in Prints, Drawings, Watercolors, and Illustrated Books. These Fellowships are part-time appointments (14 hours a week) for a period of up to 6 months, beginning in January/February, 2023.

The Claire W. and Richard P. Morse Curatorial Research Fellowships are open to individuals at different stages of their doctoral or postdoctoral career.

The MFA’s collection of prints and drawings is one of the deepest and broadest in the United States, containing almost 200,000 works that range from the beginnings of printing in the fifteenth century to today. The department embraces its responsibility as a place of training and engagement with works on paper and in its activities highlights the special role the printed image plays as a mirror of society and means of communication. The department is also fully committed to acquire works and present narratives in currently underrepresented areas to ensure a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive collection.

The Fellow(s) will be based in the Department of Prints and Drawings and work closely with the Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf Curator of Design on “Digital Koehler,” a research project supported by The Getty Paper Project. The Fellow(s) will also have the opportunity to research, catalogue, and interpret some area of the MFA’s renowned collection of works on paper, to be determined both by the needs of the Museum and the specialized knowledge of the successful candidate.

As part of the Prints and Drawings team at the MFA, the Fellow(s) will have access to the MFA’s expertise, resources and research facilities and participate in a range of activities and training opportunities. The Fellow(s) are expected to contribute to the Museum’s public and academic programs and will provide a final report and presentation at the conclusion of their Fellowship.
