Modern and Contemporary Drawings Curatorial Assistant
The Morgan Library & Museum invites applications for the position of Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Drawings. Reporting to the Acquavella Curator and Department Head of Modern and Contemporary Drawing, this position will participate in the organization of exhibitions, research on the permanent collection and potential new acquisitions, and assist in relations with donors.
Responsibilities:
• Assists in executing in-house and loan exhibitions. Activities will include conducting research, drafting loan letters, catalogue entries and other didactic materials, giving occasional VIP tours and docent training, coordinating public programs with the Education department, and other aspects of exhibition planning, organization and implementation.
• Research works in the permanent collection and maintaining up to-date information in the collection database.
• Research and write about potential gifts and other acquisitions. • Assist in relations with donors, patrons, artists, and collectors; including helping to plan and organize events for the Modern and Contemporary Collectors Committee.
• Work collaboratively with other departments on museum-wide initiatives.
• Field and respond to inquiries from the general public and scholars.
• Assist with daily administrative tasks to support the functioning and growth of the department. This includes answering scholarly and public inquiries, working in coordination with colleagues in other departments and sister institutions to execute projects, and attend meetings or serve on committees as necessary.
• Speak publicly on the collection when required, and occasionally participate in the planning and content of presentations, symposia, and other programs organized by the department.
• Participate in hiring and supervising interns.
Qualifications:
• MA or work towards a PhD in art history
• Minimum two years of museum and/or exhibition experience • Broad fluency in and curiosity about history and liberal arts. • Knowledge of the history of drawings and commitment to scholarship in the field.
• A scholarly focus on 20th and 21st-century Western European and American art.
• Excellent research skills; intellectual rigor.
• Demonstrated written communication skills, with an aptitude for writing catalogue entries and preparing didactic materials. • Excellent oral communication skills, with experience in public speaking.
• Ability to communicate scholarly research in a variety of modes including the general public.
• Ability to engage with the public in various areas of the museum, including galleries, the Education Center, Gilder Lehrman Hall, Gilbert Court, and other spaces as needed.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, including demonstrated ability to work successfully in a collegial environment and manage competing deadlines.
• Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office. Familiarity with museum database systems such as TMS and programs like Photoshop and Sketch-up is highly desirable.
• Reading knowledge of a foreign language a plus
• Willingness and ability to travel locally and on occasional take domestic courier trips.
• Ability to work for extended periods on a computer, lift and carry the collection and heavy objects (up to 30 lbs.); tolerate moderate levels of dust and odor generated during normal collection management activities.
Compensation:
Annual salary $54,000. Excellent benefits.
