Making It – Bursaries for emerging artists to develop their work in printmaking

Making It will provide three emerging artists with a focussed period of time in our well-equipped printmaking studio with technical support and materials. The programme will begin with a week-long experimental workshop with access to Northern Print’s facilities, materials and technical expertise. This will be followed by a further period of time in the studio to develop skills and produce a small body of new work. The facilities include etching, relief and screenprinting alongside associated processes. There is also a darkroom, large format digital printer and lasercutting and engraving machine. The building has level access on both floors.

Work will be shared through digital media with the opportunity to present finished work at the end of the project, either online, in Northern Print’s gallery or external venue depending upon what is most appropriate. We will seek to further support the selected artists via our networks helping to create opportunities to discuss their work with those that can help them build their practice. The aim is that each artist will finish the programme with one opportunity identified upon completion of their time at Northern Print to ensure further progression.

Please note the date for the week experimental workshop will be agreed with the successful applicants and is anticipated to be in July/ August 2018. The programme will conclude in December 2018.

Who should apply?

The project is aimed at young artists who have completed their studies & most likely graduated in Fine Art. We would expect applicants to have shown commitment to continuing their practice for at least 1 year after graduation, proposing an age limit of 30 years. We would be looking for artists who have developed their skills and practice with a portfolio of strong work and some experience in print. We would be looking for a clear statement to further develop their practice with print as a key element.

There is a small contribution available for accommodation and travel expenses for those living at a distance from Northern Print. We are keen to support applications from a diversity of artists and encourage applications from individuals who may need additional or different support to access the facilities.
