Ellsworth Kelly Studio – Paid Summer Internship Program
The Ellsworth Kelly Studio, located in the idyllic Hudson Valley hamlet of Spencertown, New York, is seeking interns for its summer internship program. The seminal American artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015) has a rich legacy and an active charitable foundation. His artwork continues to be exhibited globally and the Studio maintains the Ellsworth Kelly archive and over 10,000 original sculptures, paintings, prints and drawings. Ellsworth Kelly’s artworks are included in major museum collections around the world, including MoMA, Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern, SF MoMA, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and The Blanton Museum of Art, to name only a few. This year marks Ellsworth Kelly's Centennial and is an exciting moment for Ellsworth's legacy. Major exhibitions and events focused on his life and work are scheduled to take place throughout the year and the studio interns will have an opportunity to experience and participate in the preparations for some of these milestone events.
Intern placements and tasks will be based on the skills and experience of the applicant. Possible intern projects focus primarily on handling, organizing and researching archival materials. Other project areas include implementing archival storage, database entry and collection management. Interns would work directly with studio staff on pertinent projects and will learn about Kelly’s practice and his place in the history of American art. Kelly was an avid notetaker and extremely disciplined in steering his career and studio practice – making his studio an exciting place for those interested in archival research and in 20th century abstract American prints published by Gemini G.E.L and Fondation Maeght.
Preferred candidates are current or recently graduated MA/MFA students who are focused on 20th Century Art or American Abstraction. Candidates will ideally have prior experience with art handling, archival work and/or library studies. BA/BFA students are also considered, especially those with the experience and skills listed above. The daily schedule is flexible based on the availability/preferred schedule of the intern.
The internship term will run from June 5 – August 25, 2023. Pay is $7,000-9,000 depending on prior experience and level of training.
Spencertown is in the heart of the culturally rich region nestled between the Hudson Valley and the Berkshires. The studio is a 25-minute drive from downtown Hudson, NY (where the Amtrak station is located) and a 25-minute drive from Great Barrington, MA. The Studio encourages interns to take advantage of the diverse and exciting summer activities at nearby institutions like MASS MoCA, Tang Teaching Museum, Shaker Museum, Olana, Clarke Art Institute, Tanglewood, and Jacob's Pillow. Summer is a beautiful season to be in upstate New York - especially for those who enjoy culture and the outdoors!
It is recommended that interns have a driver’s license and access to a car. The Studio will facilitate and assist with carpool and transportation when relevant/necessary. While the Studio cannot provide local housing, it can recommend where to seek summer sublets in the area.
