Collections Inventory Specialist, Prints, Drawings & Photographs (2-Year, Full-time Position)

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) seeks an energetic, detail-oriented individual for the position of Temporary Collections Inventory Specialist to play a central role in a major collection inventory, wide-ranging rehousing projects, and a digital records management initiative for over 65,000 works on paper. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with curators, registrars, and conservators to help identify collection needs and to prepare for the inventory and relocation of the BMA’s collection of prints, drawings, and photographs to a new facility.

This position will be a temporary, full-time member of the Prints, Drawings & Photographs department, working closely with an associate curator, a curatorial research associate, and a curatorial assistant in a collegial and fast-paced environment. The collection represents one of the strongest holdings of French prints in the nation as well as significant caches of prints by old master European artists, such as Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt, and early 20th-century practitioners. The photography collection has strengths in Pictorialism, experimental photography of the inter-war years, and documentary photography.

RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will take on an integral role in the survey, assessment, and execution of cataloging, housing, moving, and reorganization of one of the most significant collections of works on paper in the United States. The successful candidate will be expected to:
-conduct a thorough inventory, maintain continuity of collection information, and provide new cataloging information as needed.
-administer object moves and update database records accordingly.
-demonstrate problem-solving skills to track down and/or clarify collection inconsistencies.
-collaborate with conservation staff to determine and implement rehousing needs.
-train and supervise a rotating team of interns.
-work independently with minimal supervision.
-take on additional duties as needed.

This full-time, exempt position reports to the Senior Curator/Department Head of Prints, Drawings & Photographs.

QUALIFICATIONS
-BA with coursework in Art History or equivalent professional experience required
-MA in Art History, Museum Studies, Arts Management or similar preferred
-1-2 years’ experience working with museum or library collections; facility with The Museum System and Excel essential; database cataloging experience preferred
-Basic knowledge of a European language; French or German preferred
-Highly organized individual who can work on micro and macro levels simultaneously and accurately, and show strong attention to detail
-Familiarity with ethical principles and best practices in museum registration
-Strong time management skills, collegial and flexible attitude, and the ability to work in a collaborative environment essential
-Must be able to lift boxes up 40lbs, stand for extended periods of time, and able to climb stairs and ladders as needed
