Collection Manager, Private Collection

This is a position to help manage a Manhattan private collection, primarily of works on paper, broad-ranging, largely figurative and often relating to transitional societies and the role played by the graphic arts as a tool of propaganda or shaping of national identity.

The collection includes many Soviet works, predominantly from the 60s and 70s, but from earlier times as well; Hungarian and East German and other sub-collections, including 20th century French works.  There are also many American works of the 20th century and a small emphasis on Mexican work associated with the Taller de Grafica Popular. The tasks will include the development of an inventory and tracking system using commercially available software, as well as developing strategies for the dispersal of the collection through gift and sale.  The position, modestly paid, is ideal for graduate students interested in this subject area who might even find the research a starting point for a thesis or scholarly article, as interesting works by lesser-known artists abound.
