The Clark Art Institute is pleased to announce the Clark-Getty Curatorial Fellowship in the Manton Study Center for Works on Paper. This two-year fellowship is funded by the Getty Paper Project and offers exceptional scholarly and professional training to an emerging works-on-paper curator. The focal point of the fellowship will be participating in the planning of a major international exhibition of French drawings from the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), an exhibition being organized by the Clark Art Institute for winter 2022/23. The BnF’s collection of French drawings is vast, with holdings of extraordinary quality. The Clark-Getty Curatorial Fellow will be a fully integrated member of the exhibition team, as well as of the curatorial staff at the Clark, with opportunity to pursue his/her/their own scholarly interests alongside research for the exhibition. The fellow will gain unparalleled experience and mentorship in preparation for a career as a works-on-paper curator, including several research trips to Paris in the company of Clark curatorial staff, and will be involved in the full range of activities at the Manton Study Center for Works on Paper, including helping to organize a French drawings study day in the second year of the fellowship.

The fellowship will begin in September 2020 and continue for two years. The exhibition is expected to open at the Clark in December 2022.

Applications submitted before April 15 will be given priority. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
Participate in the planning of a major international exhibition of French drawings from the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), including several research trips to Paris in the company of Clark curatorial staff.
Conduct in-depth research on French drawings and other topics in areas of scholarly interest
Visit international public and private collections.
Attend Master Drawings Week in New York, Salon du Dessin in Paris, and other fairs and professional gatherings focused on works on paper.
Help to organize a French drawings study day in the second year of the fellowship
Present public lecture on selected research topic (if desired).
Work closely with senior curators and other Clark staff on exhibition preparation, acquisition research, and other ongoing activities of the department; receive practical training in a broad spectrum of curatorial skills.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Skills:
PhD or ABD in Art History required
Demonstrated interest and prior accomplishment in the field of European works on paper, through academic study and/or museum experience
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively
French-language proficiency
Resourcefulness, strong initiative, adaptability, and creativity
Strong organizational skills
Interest in and enthusiasm for museum work, with preference given to applicants intending to pursue a curatorial career

Work Experience:
Minimum of six months of relevant experience preferred.

Physical Demands:

Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office environment and museum spaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Some travel, including internationally, is required.
