Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program residents are selected annually based on merit from a competitive pool of applicants by a professional jury.

The Sharpe-Walentas studios are located in DUMBO, Brooklyn, a thriving waterfront community full of art galleries, creative professionals, and independent retailers. Studios have freight and passenger elevator access, high ceilings and natural light. Communal spaces include a kitchen, slop sinks, restrooms and a sitting area with wi-fi. Studio access is 24 hours/7 days week.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art seeks to fill the Margaret R. Mainwaring Curatorial Fellowship in the department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs starting in fall 2021. This is a one-year fellowship with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The Fellow will work independently and collaboratively with staff to gain in-depth curatorial training in the graphic arts and to support scholarly research on the collection. In consultation with the supervising curator, the Fellow will be fully integrated into the department and devote time to both general curatorial work and special projects, including research on new acquisitions and the collections, preparing conditions reports, and organizing gallery rotations and collections-based workshops. The Fellow will have an opportunity to develop an exhibition or other project from the museum’s permanent collection. The ideal candidate will also be able to contribute to ongoing department efforts to expand the geographic, thematic, and public horizons of its research, exhibition, and programming.

Founded in 1925 and named a National Historic Landmark in 2017, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is one of the world’s leading cultural institutions devoted to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of materials focused on African American, African, and African Diasporan experiences, featuring diverse programming and exhibition of over 11 million items that illuminate the richness of global Black history and culture. A research library of The New York Public Library and seeded by the collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg 95 years ago, the Schomburg Center provides free access to materials documenting Black life locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Photographs and Prints division enables researchers to work directly with original, rare, and unique visual source materials. Beginning with images collected by Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, the collection has grown through the years to include more than 500,000 items that date from the eighteenth century to the present. It is not an overstatement to say the division contains the history and future of Black photography and imagery.

As part of a dynamic curatorial and leadership team, the Curator will provide strong and effective subject expertise, leadership and vision in developing and promoting the photograph and print collections, serve as the primary spokesperson for the division, and undertake activities that advance expanded use of the collection and other strategic goals. In 2021 the Lyonel Feininger Gallery in Quedlinburg, the only museum in the world dedicated to the work of the famous Bauhaus master, will celebrate the 150th birthday of its namesake with a large exhibition entitled “Becoming Feininger - Lyonel Feininger for the 150th Birthday” (March 28 to September 12, 2021).

The exhibition and the artist's 'birthday' should be the occasion to collect current research approaches and results on the life and work of Lyonel Feininger and the Feininger family of artists in a symposium planned for July 17, 2021.

Job Summary
Performs general maintenance and support of analog and digital needs for Printmaking, Intermedia, Design, Animation, and Photography areas of the Department of Art. The position requires technical responsibility for and maintenance of the printmaking studio, printmaking presses, darkroom, and printers. Professional duties include handling materials and chemicals used in fine arts printmaking, adhering to EH&S standards, and supporting faculty and students.

Essential Functions
Manages, supervises, and maintains the department’s printmaking and digital facilities including Printshop, Cave (equipment loaning), Photography studio, Lighting studio (SAB 240), and department computer classrooms to ensure safe and efficient operation on a day-to-day basis.
Identifies, plans, and recommends future improvements and acquisitions for the printmaking, photography and digital areas based on need and innovations, including soliciting bids, purchasing, and scheduling work (in conjunction with the Facilities Manager).
Manages with faculty input (consultation) printmaking and digital budgets and acquisitions of tools, equipment, furnishings, and supplies.
Provides direct classroom support in classes scheduled for the printmaking, animation, intermedia, and design areas. May prepare materials for and conduct demonstrations of methods and techniques to students during class as requested by instructors.
Provides direct support to faculty and other patrons of the Digital Print Center (DPC) including the preparation and printing and mounting of digital artwork, accepting payment for services, issuing receipts, ordering materials and equipment, and reconciling accounts.
Manages the daily operation of the equipment loan office: monitors inventory; inspects and repairs equipment; plans for replacement. Supervises check-out and check-in and associated record keeping by student staff.
In collaboration with the Technical Assistant III (Digital Technician), oversees the operation and maintenance of the department’s digital studios (computer studios) to ensure facilities and equipment are kept up-to-date, suited for the need of each instructor, in good repair, and secure.
Ensures compliance with EH&S standards for the safe and proper handling, labeling, storage, and recycling/disposal of materials by students, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Two years experience supporting an active printmaking studio.
Up-to-date knowledge of and extensive experience in all aspects of print media including: aluminum plate and stone lithography; copper plate intaglio and photo polymer gravure techniques; water based photo silkscreen processes; and operation of a Dufa offset press.
Extensive experience with and knowledge of Macintosh systems in a networked environment.
Extensive knowledge of analog photography including 35mm medium- and large-format cameras, darkroom, and printing.
Extensive knowledge of current Adobe Creative Suite and current Apple Final Cut Pro Studio.
Experience in instructional media and educational technologies; experience supporting users in an academic environment.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to students, staff, and faculty in a wide range of print and digital imaging technologies and with varied skill levels.

On January 13–15, 2022, the Index of Medieval Art (Princeton University), the Pierpont Morgan Library & Museum (New York), and the Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University will host a conference to accompany the exhibition, “Imperial Splendor: The Art of the Book in the Holy Roman Empire, 800–1500,” presented at the Morgan Library from October 15, 2021 to January 23, 2022. The conference will include two days of papers as well as a study day at the Morgan Library. For each paper, 30 minutes of speaking time, followed by 15 minutes of discussion, will be allotted. In addition to a viewing of the exhibition, the study day will include an opportunity to view other, unexhibited materials in the Morgan’s collections.

Despite its scope, the exhibition cannot comprehend all the relevant material in American collections. Nor can the accompanying book treat all the exhibited items in depth. With this in mind, we solicit proposals for papers. Pending the usual peer-review process, the contributions will be published.

Paper proposals, no more than one page in length, should fall into one of the following categories or address one of the following topics:

– in-depth monographic discussion of a single manuscript in an American collection, whether or not it is included in the exhibition. Finalized abstracts, which will be circulated to all participants, would then be due by August 1, 2021. The organizers will do their best to accommodate all relevant proposals within the confines of the program, the scope and format of which will be determined by the funding available and the current public health situation. In the event that an in-person meeting is feasible, speakers’ costs for travel and accommodation in Princeton and New York will be covered. AAMC Foundation's Engagement Program for International Curators (EPIC) offers curators a rare and valuable platform for cross-cultural connections and relationship building. Participants gain new perspectives, partake in multi-national conversations, and advance professional skills. The 2021 EPIC program is entirely virtual and will award six International Awardees and six U.S. Liaisons.

With inclusion spanning 27 countries, the AAMC Foundation creates and strengthens international relationships between curators by providing a cross-cultural platform and programming. Specifically, EPIC has connected 28 curators from 9 countries, including support for curators from the United Kingdom, made possible by the Art Fund, in addition to our American Art-focused program. As we celebrate our fifth year of EPIC engagement, we are pleased to bring curators this opportunity again.

Applications become available on Saturday, November 21, 2020 and are open to nonprofit curators around the globe having worked or currently working within collections, exhibitions and/or currently with projects in development that explore historical art of the United States (c. 1500-1980), including Native American Art and U.S. Latinx Art, as well as painting; sculpture; works on paper, such as prints, drawing and photography; de corative arts; performance; and design (except industrial). Architecture and commercial film are excluded.

The final deadline to apply is 12pm ET on Friday, January 8, 2021. This program is made possible through the generous support of the Terra Foundation for American Art.

2021 VIRTUAL PROGRAM BENEFITS
The program is fully funded for participants and the application process is free and available online. Pairings are introduced in February 2021 and meet virtually at least twice to advance shared interests, goals, and dialogues. They will work together to host a Curator Gathering, an informal 45-minute peer-to-peer discussion open to our curatorial community on a topic of their choosing in the fall/winter 2021. Together, the full 2021 cohort will collaborate to create a free and open webinar for the larger AAMC Foundation network. The program ends in December 2021.
