Getty Graduate Curatorial Internships in Prints, Drawings, and Photographs (three 12-month positions)

J. Paul Getty Museum and Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles and Malibu, CA, United States
Applications due: 11/01/2019
Getty Graduate Internships are offered in the four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust—the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute, the Getty Conservation Institute, and the Getty Foundation, as well as in Getty Publications—to graduate students who intend to pursue careers in the visual arts. Training and work experience placements are available in areas such as curatorial, education, conservation, research, publications, information management, public programs, and grantmaking. To learn more about the Graduate Intern experience, follow the #GettyGrad conversation on Facebook.

Curators Naoko Takahatake, Julian Brooks, and Jim Ganz are pleased to invite applications for three 12-month graduate curatorial internships, starting in September 2020:

Curatorial (Prints and Drawings), Getty Research Institute (Naoko Takahatake)
Working closely with the Curator of Prints and Drawings, the intern will participate in two collection assessment and research projects: 1) a curatorial and conservation review of the Getty Trust Art Collection, which includes some 260 works, primarily prints and drawings, by artists active in the United States and Europe since 1945, and 2) a survey of the Prints and Drawings collection, which dates from the 15th century to the present, and comprises more than 30,000 works. The permanent collection area(s) to be addressed can be determined by the intern’s expertise. While focused on these two projects, the intern will have opportunities to engage in a broad range of curatorial and administrative responsibilities. The intern will gain familiarity with various aspects of curatorial practice, including the care, handling, and cataloguing of works on paper, acquisition proposals, object-based research and writing, project management, and collaboration with collection managers, registrars, conservators, and other professional staff throughout the GRI. A background in art history, with some experience with prints and/or drawings, and reading knowledge of German plus French or Italian are preferred.

Drawings Department, J. Paul Getty Museum (Julian Brooks)
The Drawings Department intern will be deeply involved in a variety of curatorial projects, including preparing exhibitions both large and small, researching potential/new acquisitions, and creating labels and web content. He or she will work directly with the curators on the study and display of the Getty’s major collection of European drawings

Photographs Department, J. Paul Getty Museum (Jim Ganz)
The intern in the Department of Photographs will assist the curatorial staff on one or more exhibitions scheduled for 2020-2021 and beyond, including projects related to American, European and Japanese photography. Responsibilities may include conducting research on the permanent collection, cataloging works for display, drafting label copy, and assisting with logistics related to the organization of exhibitions and publications. In addition, the intern will work on acquisition proposals and collections management. The intern will also staff the department’s study room one day per week. Candidates must possess attention to detail, good organizational skills, an ability to multitask, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Art handling and TMS training will be provided, but previous experience is preferred.

2019 Graduate Summer Internships, National Gallery of Art, Washington D. C.

National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, United States
Applications due: 01/12/2019
Nine-week summer internships provide opportunities to work on projects directed by a Gallery curator or department head. Biweekly museum seminars introduce interns to the broad spectrum of museum work, and to Gallery staff, departments, programs, and functions.

Please check prerequisites carefully. Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. This is an international program.

Summer interns will be in residence at the Gallery from June 3 to August 2, 2019. Interns must be available for the entire nine weeks, 40 hours per week.
Interns receive a stipend of approximately $4,500 that is subject to all applicable taxes. Interns using an authorized public transportation method will receive an employer-provided fare subsidy to apply toward their monthly transit costs.

Print related internships listed, among others include:
"Library: Rare Prints Project"
The intern will assist with researching and cataloging the Library’s collection of “reproductive” chalcographic prints from the Chalcographie du Louvre (1797–present), the Calcografia di Roma (1738–present), the International Chalcographical Society (1886–1892), and the Arundel Society (1848–1897). The prints represent a variety of techniques, including etching, engraving, aquatint, chromolithographs, and photogravures, and depict works largely by 17th- to 19th-century Italian and French painters. Many of the prints were pulled in the early 20th century from 17th- to 19th-century plates, and represent work from some of the best-known engravers of their time. Current graduate students interested in the history of printmaking (particularly 19th-century printmaking practices/institutions) or European art history (17th–19th century) are eligible to apply. Basic knowledge of Italian and French is required. Candidates should also have an understanding of printmaking techniques and materials as well as familiarity with museum registration or archival procedures and methods.

"Publishing Office: Mark Rothko, Works on Paper"
The intern will assist with the forthcoming online catalogue raisonné of Mark Rothko’s works on paper, which includes more than 2,600 objects. Duties may include conducting research on thematic topics (history of display of Rothko’s and his contemporaries’ works on paper, court proceedings over the distribution of Rothko’s estate); conducting provenance, exhibition history, and bibliographic research for individual works; assembling data for a robust biographical chronology; drafting brief texts on individual exhibitions; assisting with tasks related to the production of the catalogue (fact checking, editing, and researching content submitted by in-house and outside contributors). Applicants should have specialized knowledge or coursework in 20th-century American art. Familiarity with FileMaker Pro is desirable.
