It’s been 4 whole years since our last one, so we’re practically chomping at the bit to get inky and print up some gigantic relief blocks in our back driveway.

Since the mid-20th century, California has been a beacon of both inventive design and political activism. Exploring the intersection of these realms, this exhibition uses case studies from LACMA’s collection to demonstrate how designers and artists championed civil rights, opposed wars and injustice, and pressed for change. Skilled communicators by profession, they distilled complex issues into eye-catching images, often appropriating commercial art techniques—from newspaper broadsheets to screen prints to digital downloads—to distribute powerful imagery despite limited resources. Others led workshops and formed printing collectives, providing movements with new methods for disseminating their messages. Their works express both outrage and optimism, going beyond protest to envision alternative ways of living. Key figures and organizations including Emory Douglas of the Black Panther Party, Sheila Levrant de Bretteville of the Woman’s Building, Self Help Graphics & Art, and street artist Shepard Fairey achieved widespread acclaim and notoriety, galvanizing political movements and empowering marginalized communities.

Join Art Historian Brittany M. Hudak on Zoom to learn about Australian artist Thea Proctor and how queer women networked internationally through printmaking in the 1920s.

Self Help Graphics & Art invites you to stop by our Open Studio and meet Kalli Arte, our Beyond the Press resident artist. The open studio takes place on the third Thursday of the month from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Self Help Graphics & Art. It's is an opportunity to engage with the artists, ask questions and see their work in progress. Limited space is available. RSVP today!

In this Letterform Lecture with Mike Hudson, we will explore the surprisingly complex history of printing for readers who are visually impaired.

Louis Braille published his monumental work introducing the Braille System in 1829. That book, the Procede pour ecrire les Paroles… was embossed in raised letters, a system invented by Valentin Haüy. Only six known copies survive today. Books in alternative tactile formats had been available in France since 1786, but it would not be until the 20th century that braille would be adopted around the world.

In this Letterform Lecture, Mike Hudson will lead us on an exploration of the surprisingly complex history of printing and embossing for readers who are blind or visually impaired.

We presented this exhibition briefly earlier this year to coincide with the Southern Graphics Council International printmaking conference that took place in Madison in March 2022. Upon request, we are happy to present a revised version of the exhibition for the summer season.

The pop-up exhibition features a selection of works created by emerging and established artists at Tamarind Institute, the internationally acclaimed lithography workshop based in Albuquerque. Artists include Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, Rose B. Simpson, Paula Wilson, Linn Meyers, and Matt Shlian.

Edinburgh Art Festival and Edinburgh Printmakers present newly commissioned work from Montreal-based artist Nadia Myre responding to the 200th anniversary of the Union Canal. The project - across print, installation and sound - explores reference points spanning Scotland and Canada, migratory routes started on the canal, indigenous story-telling, archival research methods, pattern, prose and song. The artist's research began with the encounter of Tales Of Nanabozho in a local library in Montreal - a book published in 1964 by Scottish-born émigré Dorothy Marion Reid after moving to Canada, who recounts stories of Nanabozho, a prominent trickster character to the Anishinaabe, provoking questions of authorship and voice reverberating into the present. As an Algonquin member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, Myre's work sited alongside the canal and in Gallery 2 at Edinburgh Printmakers brings to the fore the decolonial impulse inherent in the artist's practice, imprinting and entangling materials with meaning.

Edinburgh Printmakers presents Glasgow-based artist Tessa Lynch, whose practice centres on feminist readings of the city, highlighting issues of social reproduction that are often at odds with contemporary art and life. The exhibition promotes alternative building techniques inspired by collaborative play and the natural world, taking its title from a 1986 BBC documentary series which looked at the failures of the modern movement's social housing.
