Cataloguer, Bengali (Two Centuries of Indian Print)

Full Time, Fixed Term for 1 year

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Bengali language cataloguer to join the Two Centuries of Indian Print project in the South Asia section, within the BL’s Asia and African Collections.

The post holder will provide cataloguing support for material included within the British Library’s collections of printed books in Bengali, which include important early printed collections, the majority of which are currently listed only in printed catalogues. Work will also entail creating catalogue records for new titles in Bengali acquired through purchase and donation, as well as assisting with user enquiries. Additional tasks may include the cataloguing of serials and sorting and deduplication of items which are currently part of a backlog.

The successful applicant will have a degree, or equivalent knowledge of Bengali, as well as the ability to transliterate Indian scripts with complete accuracy in accordance with Library of Congress and British Library standards. In addition, the post holder will have a good knowledge of the cultural history of South Asia to a level sufficient for checking and assigning subject headings, and will have a demonstrable ability to see activities and projects through to completion.

Knowledge of other South Asian languages, in particular Assamese and/or Sylheti, would be highly desirable.
Previous experience of work in a research library, academic or other relevant environment, or experience of cataloguing library collections would be advantageous
