Assistant/Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings & Photographs (Baltimore Museum of Art)

Overview:
The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) seeks an Assistant or Associate Curator to work full-time in the Department of Prints, Drawings & Photographs with a small curatorial staff and a collection of 65,000 works on paper, including the BMA’s world-renowned holdings of prints, drawings, and books by Henri Matisse.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Propose, research, and organize exhibitions of works on paper and coordinate rotations in the collection galleries
• Work with the Curatorial Assistant to supervise the Samuel H. Kress Foundation Study Center for Prints, Drawings & Photographs through the selection of objects, teaching of classes, and hosting of visitors
• Oversee various collection management projects, including the cataloguing of new acquisitions and the augmentation of on-line records for the BMA’s collection of works on paper
• Make acquisition recommendations to senior curator as well as research, write justifications for, and present new acquisitions
• Conduct research and write for various publications on the BMA’s collection of works on paper
• Help to manage graduate fellows, interns, and volunteers
• Participate in programming for the BMA’s Friends Group the Print, Drawing & Photograph Society, including giving talks, tours, and presentations
• The Assistant or Associate Curator will report to the Senior Curator and Department Head of Prints, Drawings & Photographs.

REQUIREMENTS
• Masters in Art or Art History required, PhD in Art History preferable
• At least three years of previous curatorial experience in a department of works on paper, including the handling and cataloguing of prints
• Specialization in late 19th century and modern European art as evinced by exhibitions, publications, conference papers, and/or special cataloguing projects
• Familiarity with the history of printmaking and printmaking techniques
• Working knowledge of at least one foreign language, preferably French or German
• Working proficiency in collection management databases, especially The Museum System (TMS)
• Working proficiency in Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook
• Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team
• Dexterity for handling works on paper and general fitness for lifting and moving heavy solander boxes
