Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings, Blanton Museum of Art

Purpose ---
Working with the Curator of Prints and Drawings, the assistant curator is responsible for overseeing an encyclopedic collection of more than 15,700 works on paper at the Blanton Museum of Art including managing a very active study room, cataloguing, care, research and storage. Develop regular rotations.

Essential Functions ---
Manage the Julia Matthews Wilkinson Center for Prints and Drawings where works on paper are stored and visitors may access and examine works of art. Supervise staff and interns. Perform ongoing research and cataloguing of the collection. Regularly organize print and drawing rotations in Paper Vault galleries and assist Curator in planning larger exhibitions in the Blanton's main temporary exhibition galleries. Assist in the development and production of interpretive strategies and materials as they relate to exhibition projects. Collaborate with the Director of Education and Academic Affairs and other museum staff in the creation of program content and participate in program activities as related to the print and drawing collection. Assist in training docents and gallery assistants in specific content areas and museum practices. Encourage and facilitate use of Wilkinson Center resources in teaching among university faculty and staff across campus as well as other Austin communities and audiences. Draft appropriate texts for museum publications and gallery labels in various formats. Contribute to publications outside the museum as pertinent to the Blanton collection. Conduct and oversee original research and interpret the Blanton's collections particularly in area of expertise. Supervise and assist with projects of guest curators, visiting scholars, university student researchers and curatorial interns. Liaise with the scholarly community in area of expertise and participate in conferences and symposia as appropriate opportunities arise. Assist Curator with fundraising strategies for the prints and drawings collection and actively participate in the solicitation process including some cultivation of donors and collectors. Develop and implement preservation and conservation strategies of the highest professional standards for the Blanton's collections of prints and drawings.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Required qualifications
- Master's degree in art history.
- Two years museum experience working in the field of early modern Eupropean prints.
- Demonstrated specialty in early modern European prints with working knowledge across the history of printmaking.
- Reading ability in either French, Italian, Spanish or German. Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal and management skills.
- Collaborative, collegial, creative, independent and resourceful in work.
- Demonstrated integrity in all professional matters. Willingness to work proactively with students of all ages, docents, volunteers, academic and university colleagues and general audiences.
- Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in art history
