Artist Residencies at the Frans Masereel Centrum

In recent decades, the Frans Masereel Centrum has become one of the most challenging and inspiring environments for contemporary artists to investigate printed matter in all its aspects, or to embrace it as part of a broader artistic practice. Critics, writers, curators and academics also use our facilities, to conduct theoretical research in the private context of an active arts center. Every year, an international, intergenerational mix of around 50 artists and critics is selected by an external jury to stay and work in the Frans Masereel Centrum for 3 or 6 weeks. No prior knowledge of printmaking techniques is required.

The Centre is accepting applications for its General and Essay residencies.

General Residency
Our general residency program invites artists to realize an individual, multiform, print-related project that matches their artistic practice. The focus of the general residency lies on development, creation and eventually production in one or more of our workshops. No prior knowledge of printmaking techniques is required. At FMC, you will have access to our various printmaking facilities, including typography with wooden or lead typesetting, intaglio, screenprinting, riso and lasercut. Some artists prefer to develop a more process-oriented research project. In that case, prior knowledge of printmaking techniques is required. €350 per week

Essay Residency
Critics, writers, artists, curators and academics can reside at the Centre to conduct theoretical research about the medium of printmaking, prepare a critical text on a print-related topic, develop ideas for curatorial projects, etc. Both our collection and library are available for research. Participants are invited to join the weekly organized artist meetings, during which the projects are discussed collectively. Individual feedback will be given on a regularly basis by visiting tutors. €175 per week

Each residency includes workshop facilities, use of equipment, basic materials and accommodation in our fully equipped bungalows.

Applications are due by May 21, 2020.
