Mellon Curatorial Research, Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane
Newcomb Art Museum seeks applications for a two-year, Andrew W. Mellon-funded Collection Research & Interpretation position. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Mellon Curatorial Research staff person will help to strengthen collections management, cataloguing, and interpretation for museum. This individual will research and write descriptions of each object, updating object descriptions and subject tags to democratize language referring to race and ethnicity and to remove cultural biases and language that is informed by structural inequality, stereotypes, and exclusionary practices.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience Requirements
• Knowledge of the histories of art or visual and material culture, with an emphasis on prints and drawings and decorative arts, as well as broad knowledge of other dominant media in the collection such as painting, ceramics, sculpture and photography.
• Knowledge of art-making processes and related identification techniques, with emphasis on printmaking and photography techniques.
• Knowledge of standard museum collections management practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of museum databases, preferably Embark or TMS.
• Experience in proper handling of collection items.
• At least one year of related experience preferred, specifically in museum cataloguing, interpretation, and collections research.
Skills and Competencies Requirements
• Collaborative approach to problem solving and the ability to work as part of a team in a professional environment with diverse audiences
• Ability to work independently and exercise judgment, establish priorities, and manage projects with minimal supervision
• Attention to detail, highly organized, motivated and flexible.
• Possess critical and analytical thinking as well as problem solving and clerical skills, and a commitment to museum ethics.
• Command of the English language, both written and verbal, and ability to read cursive handwriting.
• Unwavering commitment to fostering an antiracist, equitable work environment supportive of people from different cultures, backgrounds, and life paths
Required Education and/or Experience
B.A. degree is required, preferably in art history, English, graphic design, journalism, or a closely-related field; M.A. is preferred.
All applicants should have at least 4 years of full-time experience in a museum role requiring extensive written communication with the public or in a media/communications environment.
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of artists from the American South, particularly the Gulf South preferred.
