Librarian/Archivist, Milwaukee Art Museum

The Knowledge Management department of the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) is hiring a Librarian/Archivist to manage day-to-day oversight and operation of the Museum’s Research Center and research collections, including the library, institutional archives, manuscript collections, rare books collections, and related library/archive services.
A critical member of the Knowledge Management team, the Librarian/Archivist is responsible for ensuring proper description and organization of assets that allow the staff and public to find and navigate 130-years of information about the Museum, artists, and the collection as a whole. The Librarian/Archivist reports to the Head of Knowledge Management and Digital Assets and works closely with them to shape the vision and focus of the research collections and to determine strategies to achieve them.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for daily management of the library’s collection of books, periodicals and special collections, as well as print and digital subscriptions, including activities related to collection development, cataloguing, and loans.
Responsible for accession, preservation, arrangement, and description both physical and digital archival materials relating to the museum’s collections and history.
Provide reference services for Museum staff, interns, and external scholars, including researching and responding to reference questions via email, phone, and in-person appointments.
Manage library activities related to the storage, upkeep, access, preservation, and circulation of the library collections in accordance with ALA and SAA standards and best practices.
Educate Museum staff on archiving procedures, services, and objectives.
Collaborate on special projects and digital preservation and research initiatives with curatorial, and other museum departments as needed.
Submit invoices and payments, track spending, and manage annual department budget.
Maintain vendor and institutional relations for databases, subscriptions, electronic resources, book and supply purchasing, and digitization.
Upkeep library stacks and reading room area. Process and re-shelve library and archive materials.
Oversee and maintain collection management systems and other tools to create online finding aids and points of access to the library, archive and special collection services.
Develop and implement policies and procedures for users of the library and archives.
Train and oversee library and archives volunteers and interns for Knowledge Management
initiatives.
Carry out other duties as assigned including assistance with special projects as needed.


Qualifications:

MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent combination of education. Specialization in archives preferred.
2-4 years’ experience of progressive responsibility in a library, archives or cultural/reference collections’ management organization.
Experience with departmental budget preparation.
Knowledge of computer standards and applications in archives and libraries including MARC, and EAD.
