The Contemporary Print, 2019

PrintAustin is thrilled to announce the open call for its 6th annual juried international exhibition, The Contemporary Print. Presented in collaboration with Big Medium, this year’s exhibition will be juried by Dr. Anna Katherine Brodbeck, and be held at Big Medium Gallery during PrintAustin 2019.

The Contemporary Print is a survey of traditional printmaking techniques and innovative approaches in contemporary printmaking. While non-traditional or digital output is accepted as a print element, submissions must utilize traditional print media as their primary technique. These include lithography, relief, intaglio, silkscreen, photo polymer plate (i.e. SolarPlates), and monotype.

Solely digital and photographic prints are not eligible. For questions regarding eligible media, please contact admin@printaustin.org.

ABOUT BIG MEDIUM Big Medium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting contemporary art in Texas. ABOUT THE JUROR Dr. Anna Katherine Brodbeck has served as the Nancy and Tim Hanley Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art since January 2017. A Ph.D. in art history, Dr. Brodbeck earned her master’s and doctorate degrees from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, where she focused on Latin American art, as well as Islamic Art.

From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Brodbeck acted as the Associate Curator at Carnegie Museum of Art for a retrospective of the contemporary Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica, co-organized with the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Previously, she was a curatorial research assistant at The Frick Collection, where she conducted research for Picasso’s Drawings, 1890–1921: Reinventing Tradition (2011). She worked at The Museum of Modern Art on the 2007 exhibition Richard Serra Sculpture: Forty Years as a curatorial intern, as well as gallery assistant at the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

ELIGIBILITY Open to local and international artists 18 years or older. Any 2-D or 3-D work including ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, and artist books that uses printmaking as the sole or primary technique in its execution are eligible. Work cannot exceed 72 inches (183 cm) in any direction.
