Four of the world’s foremost experts on the work of American modernist John Marin will discuss the latest interpretations of the use and purpose of drawings in modern art, particularly with regard to Marin’s work featured in Becoming John Marin: Modernist at Work.

Becoming John Marin explores the artist’s transformation from intuitive draftsman to innovative watercolorist and etcher. A revelatory new look at Marin’s work, the exhibition is a unique opportunity to see finished watercolors, etchings and oil paintings reunited with the sketches on which they were based for the first time outside the artist’s studio.

MEET THE PANELISTS:
Ann Prentice Wagner, Ph.D. is Curator of Drawings at the Arkansas Arts Center, curator of Becoming John Marin: Modernist at Work and author of the accompanying collection catalog.

Josephine White Rodgers, Ph.D. is Research Assistant, Drawings, Prints and Graphic Design at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, co-curator of the exhibition, and co-author of the associated collection catalog.

Shelley R. Langdale, Ph.D. is Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which holds the greatest collection of John Marin etchings and etching plates, and a contributor to the exhibition catalog.

Ruth Fine, retired as Curator of Modern and American Prints and Drawings and Curator of Special Projects at the National Gallery of Art, which holds the largest collection of John Marin works in the world, and where Fine curated a major exhibition of Marin works, Selections and Transformations: The Art of John Marin.
