Research Assistant, Rare Books — Getty Research Institute

Job Summary ---

The Getty Research Institute seeks a Research Assistant to assist both the curator of Rare Books for 13 hours per week and the Project Manager for the Getty Research Portal (portal.getty.edu) for 20 hours per week. Will assist curator by conducting research, writing and other curatorial work related to acquisitions, exhibitions, publications and presentations. Will assist the Project Manager on research and on all matters bibliographic with regard to the Portal, a free online search platform providing global access to digitized art history texts.


Major Job Responsibilities ---

Conducts research in the special collections and contributes to the conceptual development of a project by organizing/creating documentation of found materials, such as bibliographies, searching for and ordering texts, writing literature reviews, etc
Requests images for exhibitions and/or publications; researches and obtains art and image permissions
Proofreads, edits, and translates as needed
Assists with creation of project websites and PowerPoint presentations
May copyedit essays, author biographies, endnotes, etc
May assist with organizing art programs for publications by communicating with authors, updating essay drafts, assisting editors in checking page proofs, proofing indexes, etc.
Assists in book digitization selection and assessment from the GRI's collections for Portal inclusion
Researches and analyzes online holdings from potential new Portal contributors
Highlights Portal content in a variety of outlets including print and online publications and on Getty social media channels


Qualifications ---

MA/Ph.D. candidate/degree in either Art History, Classics, Early Modern History, Library Science or a related humanities field with strong skills and facility in navigating a major research library.
Reading knowledge of at least two European languages essential and knowledge of Latin highly desirable, as is previous experience in dealing with rare books and primary archival materials.
Proficiency with bibliographic searching in a multitude of languages
Comfort with spreadsheet programs
Excellent organizational skills
Keen attention to detail
Ability to be flexible and multitask.
