Galina Mardilovich Awarded the 2017 APS Publication Grant
Galina Mardilovich has been awarded a grant from the Association of Print Scholars to support the publication of her forthcoming book about Russian printmaking in the late Imperial period. Mardilovich is an independent scholar specializing in the history of prints of the long nineteenth century. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 2013. Her research has been supported by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Research Institute, and the Francis Haskell Memorial Fund among others. Her work has been published in Print Quarterly, Art History, and most recently, The Burlington Magazine.
Mardilovich’s book, “‘The Independent Goddess:’ Printmaking in Late Imperial Russia” will be the first social history of prints in Russia at a time of profound artistic, cultural, political, and economic transformation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book combines art history with visual and cultural studies, offering new ways to look at Russian prints and art within a transnational framework. The award from APS will enable Mardilovich to reproduce fifty images of rarely-seen prints that are in the collections of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow, and the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg. The $2,000 award is funded by the Association of Print Scholars and through the generosity of C.G. Boerner and Harris Schrank. We thank both print dealers for their support of APS and its mission.
The three jurors agreed that Mardilovich’s proposal was compelling and effectively articulated. APS would like to thank them for their diligence and generosity in reading the submissions: Lisa Conte, Head of Conservation, The National September 11 Memorial & Museum; Elizabeth Savage, British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow, Institute of English Studies; Marilyn Symmes, Independent Curator, New York.
Based on applications to the first cycle of grants, APS has decided to divide its grant program into two distinct categories. First, an APS Publication Grant, supported with additional funding from C.G. Boerner and Harris Schrank, will help print scholars defray costs related to the publication of books, articles, and online features. This $2,000 award will be granted each fall, with applications due on August 1st. Second, an APS Collaboration Grant, which will encourage projects that bring together the print community at events like lectures, conferences, workshops, and other public programs, will be awarded in the spring. Applications for this $1,000 award will be due August 1st. Both grants support APS’s mission of encouraging innovative scholarship about printmaking and fostering dialogue among members of the print community.
