Located in Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico and one of the fastest growing in the Southwest, UNM is a Carnegie Very High Research University, a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, and the state's flagship institution of higher learning. Founded in 1963, the UNMAM is the foremost teaching collection and the largest fine arts collection in the State of New Mexico.

The Curator of Prints and Photographs will join a team of eight full time staff, reports directly to the UNMAM Director, and will be the primary curator for the museum.

As a member of an ambitious and collaborative team, the Curator will conceptualize and plan exhibitions, publications, and other projects that examine interdisciplinary themes and historical periods. The Curator will contribute to creative programming of the museum's collection and bring imaginative strategies for audience engagement. The Curator works alongside collections, preparation and education staff who also report to the UNMAM Director. A creative sense of exploration and commitment to teamwork are key to the museum's work environment and the Curator must be comfortable in an interactive, energetic workplace.

The mission of the UNMAM is to encourage an understanding and appreciation of art and its multiple roles in society by collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art drawn from the permanent collection and by hosting traveling exhibitions. UNMAM provides vibrant art experiences that provoke critical thinking about art, museums and society.

The museum's collection strengths are works on paper that include 10,000+ prints (dating from 1493-present), 10,000 photographs and early cased objects (1843-present), and nearly 1,500 drawings (17th C.-present). UNMAM also holds the Tamarind Lithography Archives (over 6,000 lithographs) and the Raymond Jonson Collection (over 2,400 works by Jonson and other artists). Other collections include painting and sculpture from Europe, the Americas, and African Art. The Curator will establish a vision for organizing exhibitions and programs that engage the entire collection.

Housed in the Center for the Arts, the recently renovated museum has six galleries occupying three floors of exhibition space (totaling 15,700 ft2), a state of the art collections vault for works on paper, and an adjoining study room where faculty and students engage with the collection.

Primary Responsibilities:
Coordinate with Collections and Exhibitions staff to conceive, design and implement exceptional exhibition installations responsive to the academic campus.
Write and edit scholarly and promotional materials that appeal to a broad range of museum visitors.
Collaborate with the Director and Collections Manager, identify acquisition, storage and conservation priorities.
Plan, develop and implement approved budgets for curatorial projects.
Collaborate with Director and Development staff on fundraising and grant writing; actively cultivate relationships with foundations, existing and potential donors, collectors and others.
Supervise undergraduate and graduate interns.
