The Association of Print Scholars is pleased to award its seventh annual Publication Grant to Meghan Forbes. The grant, in the amount of $2,000, will support her forthcoming book, Technologies for the Revolution: The Czech Avant-Garde in Print. The Publication Grant is funded by the Association of Print Scholars and the generosity C.G. Boerner and Harris Schrank.

Forbes’s forthcoming book will be “a cultural history of Central European Modernism as it played out on the printed page.” By examining the avant-garde group Devětsil and its movement known as Poetism, Forbes offers an important history of leftist art groups and practices in Czechoslovakia in the interwar period. Central to this interdisciplinary text bridging high art and commercial printing is the materiality, production, distribution, and aims of Devětsil imprints, as the group established networks of exchange throughout the continent. The Publication Grant will support research in Prague in early 2024.

Meghan Forbes works as a writer, researcher, curator, translator, and gardener. She is also currently co-curator of a retrospective exhibition on the photographer Lucia Moholy, opening at the Kunsthalle Praha in May 2024. She received her PhD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has held postdoctoral fellowships at The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She is the sole editor of the volume International Perspectives on Publishing Platforms: Image, Object, Text (Routledge, 2019).
