Sensing Beyond Seeing, in Celebrating Print Vol.2 No.2

New York, NY, United States
KADS New York is pleased to announce the fall issue of Celebrating Print, a publication that covers fine art print and printmaking in Central and Eastern Europe.

In the freshly published issue, art historian Julia Meszaros offers a survey of modern Hungarian printmaking, which encompasses early forms of narrative works as well as the radical trends of 1980s and 1990s, when artists defied the medium’s traditions by experimenting with Xerox technology and other devices. Curator Barbora Kundracikova explores the aesthetic nature of prints in Sensing Beyond Seeing by applying theory to the works of Alena Kucerova, Marie Blabolilova and Romana Rotterova—three Czech printmakers who continuously translate their personal experiences into digestible pictorial content. The October issue also delves into the realm of fantasy art, a phenomenon typically associated with Central and Eastern European print. Art historian Eva Trojanova’s Carousels of Life focuses on the expansive oeuvre of Slovak artist Vladimir Gazovic and his “efforts to reveal the truth” by combining astute observations of reality with phantasmal motifs. Fluctuations between dreams and reality find a fixed state in the works of Kamila Stanclova, another Slovak artist interviewed by editor Katerina Kyselica. Croatian artist Ana Vivoda, whose project Traces is presented to shed light on the printmaking process, reflects on her interactions with the environment as she marks the matrix.

Celebrating Print can be purchased as an individual issue or via subscription at www.celebratingprint.com.

KADS New York Presents at 2016 New York Satellite Print Fair

New York, NY, United States
KADS New York is pleased to announce our inaugural presentation at The 2016 New York Satellite Print Fair during New York Print Week in November. Our exquisite selection of fine art prints by renowned and emerging artists will offer print connoisseurs an opportunity to explore a range of traditional prints and digital prints.

Our presentation includes intaglio prints by Jiri Anderle (b. 1936, Czech), with highlights such as Dialogue with Myself (1976) and Girl With a Pearl Necklace, After Vermeer (1981). Sought-after for his explorations of the elementary themes of human existence, Anderle’s prints juxtapose the real and the fantastic, logic and absurd, beauty and hideousness, good and evil, in haunting imagery capable to touch our soul. In 1980, the American art magazine Art News declared Anderle’s Cruel Game for a Man (1975) the most important print of the 1970s.

The fantasy world unfolds in full force in variety of forms in the featured etchings by Dusan Kallay (b.1948), Kamila Stanclova (b. 1945) and Katarina Vavrova (b. 1964). We will present such treasures as Dream of John the Watchmaker (1983) and Encounter of Labyrinths (1998) by Dusan Kallay—the recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Award (1988). In 2015, the Slovak edition of Alice in Wonderland with Kallay’s illustrations received the Grand Prize Alice150 awarded in New York for the best illustrated edition of Lewis Carroll’s book.

Other highlights of our presentation include an iconic color etching The Old Moving House (1982) by Kamila Stanclova; exquisitely delicate hand-colored etchings that evoke a sense of quietude and human pathos by Katarina Vavrova; monumental mezzotints revealing grand forms of flowers floating on velvety black background by Dalibor Smutny (b. 1964); a recent series of digital prints that explore the phenomenon of graphemes by visual poet and letterist Eduard Ovcacek (b. 1933); and a series of etchings Chez Maman by Katerina Kyselica.

The New York Satellite Print Fair will take place at Manhattan’s Bohemian National Hall from November 4-6 during New York Print Week, the world’s largest international fine art print event. The Fair will feature fourteen seasoned dealers with a strong commitment to presenting fine art prints, drawings and other works on paper.

SCUBA at Tamarind Institute

Albuquerque, NM, United States
Albuquerque, NM – Tamarind Institute invites the public to its family-friendly summer celebration, Color Fest, on Saturday, July 16 from 4 – 6 pm. Enjoy the colorful exhibition, Color Coded, featuring new lithographs by David X. Levine, Matt Magee, Susan York and Jonathan Seliger; as well as the debut of new lithographs by SCUBA, the playful Santa Fe-based, artist-duo. In the workshop, Tamarind Master Printer Brandon Gunn will conduct two demonstrations of the “rainbow roll” process. And, if that’s not enough, concoct your own refreshing “rainbow blend” of cool-aid in our sunny courtyard. Families and individuals are invited to attend part or all of the festivities. A full schedule of events is available at tamarind.unm.edu.

Meet Santa Fe-based, artist-duo Sandra Wang and Crockett Bodelson of SCUBA. Tamarind became interested in SCUBA during their Ice Shelf tour, in which they drove a solar-powered and biodiesel-capable mobile gallery across the country. More recently SCUBA contributed to the epic playground installation known as Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, the work of an artist collective that grew to 135 artists. Works by SCUBA have been exhibited worldwide, and in Santa Fe at institutions such as James Kelly Contemporary, Center for Contemporary Arts, and SITE Santa Fe.

Tamarind will release new editions by SCUBA, a series of prints incorporating hand-colored collage elements. The new prints forge a traditional medium with their uniquely playful approach, bringing another layer of complexity to the already multifaceted collaborative. SCUBA will talk about these new works from 5 to 5:30 at Tamarind on July 16.

Tamarind Master Printer Brandon Gunn demonstrates the blend roll process, also known as the "rainbow roll," in which multiple colors are applied to the roller, and transferred onto a single matrix. The demonstration will take place at 4:30 and 5:30.

Tamarind Institute is an internationally recognized fine art lithography workshop affiliated with the College of Fine Arts of the University of New Mexico. Tamarind is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of lithography through education, research, exhibitions, and artist residencies, and is credited with expanding the accessibility to and popularity of printmaking among contemporary artists around the world. Tamarind frequently sponsors programs with diverse populations, locally and internationally, benefitting University, Albuquerque, and New Mexico constituencies. IMPACT 10: Encuentro España / Encounter Spain

TBD, Spain
Please make a note in your diary for Autumn 2018 (dates to be confirmed) - IMPACT 10 will be going to Spain!

The Centre for Fine Print Research, University of the West of England Bristol, are delighted to be working with and supporting SM Pro Art in the organisation of IMPACT 10 in Spain 2018.

Over the last 16 years, IMPACT has evolved as Europe’s leading academic discourse on printmaking. Printmaking is now integral to the wider academic debate, through practice, theory, visual culture, and is studied across a range of programmes, from undergraduate to PhD.

Spain has a rich cultural printmaking heritage as well as a thriving contemporary printmaking culture. We therefore want to ensure IMPACT 10 will be a visual and dynamic event that includes exhibitions and plenty of opportunities for networking.

The aim of our next IMPACT is to establish better links with Spanish printmakers both in Europe and across South and North America. And in order to do this, we will be introducing bi-lingual presentations in Spanish and English.

The theme of the event will be ENCUENTRO (ENCOUNTER)

- An ENCUENTRO with Spanish printmaking, its history, iconography and identity

- An ENCUENTRO with the future of the printmaking, new directions, identity and diversity

- An ENCUENTRO of languages and cultures

- An ENCUENTRO of styles and techniques

- And… an ENCUENTRO with the city where Impact will take place
